Am I missing something?

Postby twzorek » Sat Sep 03, 2016 8:33 pm

This past week my grandparents have heard me use some words they don't really care for, because I've been trying to change the starter on my 75 Monza with the 262. I've got everything unbolted, and I can barely get this thing to move. Its stuck in some bracket that I can't get to the second bolt on, but it has a notch in it so I'm not sure if it pops out by sliding it or not. Like I said, I can't get the thing to budge more than a quarter inch, and I really don't want to play the fool by pulling the motor to change a starter. Is there some step that I'm missing?

Is there anyway you can post a pic? I am not sure what bracket you are referring to. There are 2 bolts that hold the starter to the block, some cars have a additional support on the other end of the starter to help brace it.

The support brace on the front of the starter(usually gets left off the first time the starter gets changed) sometimes has a slotted hole where it attaches to the body of the starter. But it can still be a pain to remove.

I've gotcha. So it sounds like my options are to either take the bracket off by jimmy-rigging some kind of swivel and extension setup to try and get to the second bolt on the bracket, or to just keep fighting it as is. Thanks for the help I'll run out and try and get it again tonight. And does that mean it won't hurt it to leave the bracket off?

Personally I wouldn't bother installing the stock starter, you are much better off with a later design Delco mini starter. It is smaller, lighter, and has more power than the old starters.

Clyde is 100% right; the "mini starter" is half the size, half the weight and a sensible alternative.
In fact, tomorrow I'm installing one on a customer's 1972 454 Corvette. The gigantic OEM one that's in there doesn't turn the engine over properly when it's hot. I'[m going to fix that......

When did you become part of HotRod Magazine with that quote? :D It is hard to Imagine that one half the size is more powerful, but that is becoming much more common in the last decade or so. Harry

Usually the typos can be blamed on "sausage fingers" that cover as many as 6 characters at a time on the Samsung mobile phone touch screen, but I typed the above post on the fullsize keyboard of my laptop. Either my fingers are getting fatter or my keyboard is shrinking....
Or my eyesight could be failing.

I plan on switching to a mini-starter when I get some headers for the car, but until then I just want to drive the thing. I just ordered what I knew for sure was supposed to work with the car since I'm trying to just get it drivable again (It's sat in my grandparents backyard for almost 20 years). I figure its best to worry about the fancy stuff at a later time when I know what I have works right.

If you're going with a mini starter make sure your block is drilled for both bolts. My old 305 was only drilled for the offset pattern on the old starter, that was a fun time laying under the car drilling the second hole.... It did suck but it was totally worth it, easier to install and more clearance around the headers.
