Did the problem indeed turn out to be the pump?[/quote]
When it rains it pours. There is a independent repair shop just down the road from my office. They do the work on my vehicles when i can't or don't have the time so I had them diagnose the issue and it indeed was the fuel pump. They charged me 1 hour labor and the cost of the part. On the way home with the car tonight it started fine but seemed to run a bit rough. I was about 2 miles from the shop and the car stalled
I was committed to an on ramp and about 1/8 mile of bridge so I got the car re-fired and went for it. About half way across the bridge the car started to fill with smoke and I saw a molten fireball fall from under the car.
Right at this time I noticed the speedometer had crapped out and the smoke was beginning to clear. SOOOO hear is what I have come up with. Yes the fuel pump needed replaced. Somehow during the tow or repair my speedometer cable must have got knocked onto the header, melted and froze. It now needs replaced. I hope it didn't wipe out the gear in the transmission. My timing may have been slowly going off its setting as the distributor can be moved with a bit of force. And the icing on the cake is I'm not sure my carburetor is functioning properly and as I don't know much about them I guess its time to buy a book and figure out the issues.
