Skyhawk wins at Norwalk.

Postby opeltwinturbo » Mon May 31, 2010 12:13 am

What a surprise. My Skyhawk won "Best of Show" at the Buick Raceday car show in Norwalk, OH. last week.:th: Never thought it stood a chance against all of the GS's, GN's, and big boats. Chalk one up for the H body.

I'm assuming that is the same Kenne-Bell Skyhawk that was built up during the late 70's? It was in Popular HotRodding I believe. Certainly a lot of history goes along with that car. Interesting it has the clear parking lamps? Very nice......... :th:

Yes, this is the Kenne-Bell car from 1977. It was featured in the 1979 February issue of Popular Hot Rodding. I purchased the car in 05, it was an "Earl Schieb" white. As I was stripping it down the colors (originally painted in 1977 by Molly Sanders) began to show up. It was repainted base coat/clear coat. Not sure how the clear parking lens made it on the car but that is the one of the only difference between the original PHR picture spread and car today. Kind of like playing the game 'find 5 differences between these two pictures' ! I do have a set of amber lens. One of these days I plan to do an article on the car and will post it on the board.

I also have two other 1977 Skyhawk parts cars. One is an astroroof and the other a hatchback. Both are 4 speeds, in poor condition but the drivelines are there.

Wow, so that's been repainted like that? Very nostalgic car. Do you still have the magazine article? I believe I still have it. I got rid of all my old mags but I did try and keep all the ones with H body related articles. Are any of those decals or is everything painted on?

It was a lot of fun painting it. If you have the magazine you will think the colors are a bit different but it is the light in which the pictures were taken. When I started the project I bought just about every Feb PHR sold on ebay. Just about everything lettered on the car is decal. The sign guy spent many hours duplicating each decal to the last detail. The "CRAGER" lettering on the center caps is also decal. We couldn't find a '77 US Nationals decal so that was also reproduced. We kind of went a little anal on the detail work. Still was lots of fun. Now I'm debating if I want to tackle a total rotisserie on the 77 astroroof car. Does anyone fab quarters and fenders for these things? Next on the list is my 74 Gremlin with a 3.8 GN driveline.

No, as far as know nobody reproduces fenders or quarters. As you will find out with these cars finding parts is the biggest challenge. Best bet is to ask on this site for used parts. If you are looking for any other NOS parts let me know and I'lll do what I can. I have some pretty good sources. cjbiagi@yahoo.com

John your car deserves it! I missed this post but back in Feb. I did one on your car. Let us know if you ever get a restoration package I'm curious if anything interesting shows up on it. Brian
