Harry just bring your tent and sleeping bag and camp out at Bryans, mark ron and i do, lots of room for tents! you can run the 407 if you dont mind paying the toll to avoid most of the long weekend traffic heading out of toronto

I don't have a lot of 'official' confirmations (just send emails out a couple days back) but from what I can gather from responses and from regular attendees we could be looking at 11 cars so far and I still have to hear from a few other regulars and some who were on the fence so we could be smashing MonzaQue records this summer. Definiotely take the Port Huron crossing, Detroit can be a nightmare at anytime and your going through 2 major cities too.

Fred
Great news, missed you last year and Mark needs another tent joining him (along with Ron, of course).

Harry
Get some time off and get your Monza roadworthy ... or else (I'm not sure what else, just sounded good and mean)
Bryan is right Reid, you will want to avoid toronto if at all possable it will be a long weekend and the traffic will be brutal from toronto eastbound to past hwy 115 friday nite and saturday morning with all the cottagers heading to northeastern ontario and other points east.

Good Lord...115 is way east of Oshawa!

Ok, so what route do you suggest? I was going to run 403/401 right through, but I'm open to suggestions.

I was planning to pull out of here no later than 8 am Friday morning, so I'm guessing I would hit Toronto about 4-5 pm. Mapquest says this is a 9-hour trip; probably take me 10 or 10.5 pulling the trailer and stopping to eat.

Maybe I should leave here on Friday earlier, around 3-4 am?

Head home Sunday morning, if that's ok with Bryan and Michelle.

If the traffic is moving at 120KPH the 115 is about ten minutes east of Oshawa. God only knows how many times I've traveled that stretch of road. :bang:

Bryan, I was talking with Jamie tonight and he's in, so both of us will be there again if all goes well.

Sounds good Ken, that's 2 1st Gens confirmed now.

Reid
The problem isn't exactly Toronto (well, yes it is but ...) it is the cottage traffic heading East out of Toronto. It is a long weekend and traffic will be caotic at best. You certainly could head out earlier if you wished but cottage traffic does become a mess pretty early on a Friday afternoon because of the long weekend. I would suggest the 402/401 till you get to the 407 and take that as far east as you can. I can give you a few short cuts on Mapquest once your off the 407. Staying till Sunday morning is AOK, all the campers (and some motelers) don't head out till after we go out for Breakfast on Sunday AM.

Is that a holiday weekend for you folks?

I wondered about 407 but saw that it ends out there past Markham. Any suggestions from you guys that know the area are welcomed!

Is 407 still a good road for pulling a trailer?

407 is an excellent road, a toll road but it is a great highway.

I can put together something for you to use on mapquest and send it off to you.

reid you could come around the U.S. side of lake ontario to the thousand islands bridge then back track on the 401 to bryans, be more milage but a lot less traffic! other than that just try to get thru toronto sometime between 10 am and noon and beat the cottagers heading east. i was trying to figure out something from the end of the 407 but im not seeing any good routes that wont involve a bunch of towns and zigzagging on country roads 401 seems to be the most direct route.

Every year Toronto traffic is insane I am not afraid of much in a car or truck but I am worried about my baby oh and the wife(LOL) there (TO)nobody seems to care that 2 or 3 ft is to close to my @$$ @ 70 Mi/ hr or any time period. Been through at 2AM 3 in the fri. afternoon WTF!!! was I thinking. I am shooting for 3;30 AM to go through this time. Bryan 4 mouldmakers 6 tools to build 12 weeks and we share trucking duties (the 2 most experianced guys) going to be tight! Fred I asked the Cranky One about a Sonoma hutch (truck tent see Fred's Astre in past 'Que's pic's)straight out NOOOOOO!!!!!! The motel is her vacation, the "car thingy" is mine, no comprimises and my sissy butt doesn't seam to mind either, she lives with and married me she deserves it. Harry P.S. what is wrong with crossing at Windsor I have to with just about every ebay purchase, just accept 1/2 hr+or- is gone from your life and you can tell your grand kids about the time your brother told Cdn customs he is a porn star for something to amuse him self UHG!!!!( no I wasn't laughing then)

73astregt (sorry I don't know your name!):

Do you think the Thousand Islands Bridge would be that much better? I'm not even sure where that is....near Buffalo?

Bryan: If you know a good route back to you from 407, go ahead and send it.

Tolls: should I have Canadian $$$ for these? I can probably exchange some just across the border, can't I?

I did see that Monday is 'Civic Holiday' for you guys...is that similar to our Labor Day?

Any help I can get from you guys that know the roads up there would be appreciated.

Hope I can get the passport in time....just found out yesterday that I have no birth certificate. Parents never got me one! I've sent for a certified copy and should have in a week....that only leaves 7 weeks to get the passport.

The tolls are handled a little differently on the 407. You pay by the kilometer.
When you get on the 407 your license plate is photographed, and again when you get off. The mileage (kilometers) is then calculated and you are sent a bill in the mail.
Last I heard it costs somewhere around $30.00 to travel from one end of the 407 to the other.

For currency exchange I think your best bet is the bank you normally deal with. I'm sure they would have some foreign currencies on hand, or at the very least they can bring it in for you.

Thanks, Ken. All these little details help alot.

So I don't need cash to pay the toll right then...I just drive through without stopping?

Ok, I found the Thousand Islands Bridge. That adds 200 miles to the trip...don't think I want to go that far out of the way.

Crossing at Buffalo adds 50 miles. If the traffic situation is much better that way (enough to make up for the 50 miles) I might consider that.

Reid 73astregt is Fred, (sweet ride) if you cross at Detroit (bridge) the Duty Free on the American side has a fair priced currency exchange there are other options locally I may be able to help you with if we can sync up with our trip I live about 1 mi. from the bridge. The tunnel is Ok but that puts you downtown Detroit and Windsor not normally fun in a new town nevermind with a trailer! Our Civic Holiday was called Emancipation Day to celebrate the freeing of slaves (I believe all slaves Indian Chinese and Negro I hope that is politically correct for all concerned) Hope you have a Blast Harry

Yes, just drive right through, no stopping to pay any tolls, unlike your toll roads.

I wouldn't recommend going that far out of the way to the Thousand Islands and Buffalo won't help you at all, you'd still have to get through Toronto.

The 407 ends north of Pickering somewhere and becomes Winchester Rd which is also Highway #7. You can follow Winchester due east for quite a ways, all the way to the 115, in fact. (it goes from being Winchester to Concession Road #7 and Concession Road #8 but it is pretty much straight). You can just get on the 115, head south back to the 401 and continue heading East to our place. I'll send a map to you via email.

I would just use your bank as Ken suggested, I would imagine they would have the best exchange rates for you, rather than some privately run places. The duty free does have them too, but, again, not sure who runs them.
