Hey Vermont Spyder, If you want someone to make the trip with you I will meet you somewheres and we can split the costs of the trip. My Mirage is still a shell but I would like to make at least one of these meets sometimes. Let me know if you're interested.

Google says 488 miles, 9 hours from Union County, Ohio...

Now, what's this I heard about some special U.S. license? Did they eliminate the @#$%^&*! passport requirement?

My understanding is you don't need this licence IF you already have your passport. It was just an alternative to getting a passport (possibly less expensive ???)

I did some checking...the EDL is only available in a few border states; not in Ohio.

I'd love to come up but the chances are slim this year. Between a couple of passports and gas, that's a vacation expense right there. I'd make it an extended vacation and come back through Niagara/Buffalo but that won't be much fun pulling a trailer.

I'd love to see all you guys again, so I won't rule it completely out yet. Probably have to stick to shows in Ohio this summer.

After quite a bit more thought, I think I'm going to try to make it this year. Probably would cross the border on Friday, otherwise it would be late afternoon Saturday before I arrived. Don't want to miss out on food!

Anyone else thinking about making the trip from Ohio or west/south? I would be taking I-75 to Port Huron, Michigan (shorter than crossing at Detroit).

Possible caravan.

Are you reading this Mark, you may no longer be the long haul award guy, lol.

Great news Reid, maybe knowing 1 guy is making the trip from that neck of the woods will entice others to seriously consider it.

Hahaha....what do I win? A steak while everyone else eats burgers?

Won't count, though...Mark will be driving his.

Printed out my passport application last night. I can actually get a card instead of a book...cheaper...55 bucks and good for 10 years.

Still researching Canada customs. Not sure if they will complain about no plates on my car (even being on the trailer). I have insurance and a clear title, of course. I will probably go ahead and get Historical Vehicle plates just in case.

861.69 miles from Rockwood, TN to Codrington, ONT.

While I feel the '73 Hatchback's sleeved 140 would make the trek quite easily, I think it needs some work before I'd feel comfortable about it. Battery tray area replacement, new tires, maybe a U-joint, refill diff and trans, spare distributor pickup/coil, etc......

I'd love to do the Wagon with the 215 and the 0.63 Overdrive T-5 trans...... hmmmm? And it would be a good place to camp/sleep!

861.69 miles? If the wagon isn't roadworthy by then... (and it doesn't look like it will be)..... The Hatchback could be a viable option now that it's a mobile home!

Needs some balljoints, tierod ends, bearings, rotors/pads, and some grease here and there but I'd drive it anywhere.
Now about that passport stuff.........

If you're thinking about it, Dwight, don't wait too long on the passport. I think we still have plenty of time but I'm going to go do mine next week.

You could come up a day early and "camp" over night at my place if you want to break up the driving a little.

I'll start looking into it. Was really hoping that the 215 powered wagon would be ready but I've really fallen off on working on it since it's 60 miles away at my buddy's place.

The hatchback's battery tray area is completely rusted out now........ doubt I'll get it repaired by then but I can fashion something up temporary until it does get fixed.
Needs front end rebuilt.... rotors and pads .... and some general pm but I think the old 2.3L would make the trip.
Road Trip!

Ok Bryan, a few questions. Figured I would post this here since it may help others. MOST of these are serious questions; you can decide which are which:

1. What kind of nighttime temperatures can we expect up there in August?

2. Speed limit across 401 / 402?

3. How particular are the 'Mounties' about speeding?

4. Is it legal / illegal to talk on a cellphone while driving in Canada?

5. Will you come bail me out if I get arrested and thrown in a Provincial Prison?

6. Will I get eaten by grizzly bears camping out in your yard?

I'm sure Bryan will post, untill then:

1. What kind of nighttime temperatures can we expect up there in August?
The record low is 8*C, but it is usually between 18* to 24*C.

2. Speed limit across 401 / 402?
The speed limit on the 400 series highways is 100KPH (62 MPH) but you can usually get away with 120KPH if traffic permits and you're not driving like a fool.

3. How particular are the 'Mounties' about speeding?
When driving on the highways you would be dealing with the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police). In cities or large towns you would be dealing with municipal police. Drive the speed limit in towns/cities and 20KPH or less over the limit on highways and you should be fine.

4. Is it legal / illegal to talk on a cellphone while driving in Canada?
No texting or cell phone use while driving. Hands free phone usage is permitted.

5. Will you come bail me out if I get arrested and thrown in a Provincial Prison?
We can see about getting everyone to chip in on your bail.

6. Will I get eaten by grizzly bears camping out in your yard?
You don't need to worry about no Grizz. The black flies may be a different story.

It would be great to see some new faces this year, not that there's anything wrong with the old ones.

Thanks Ken.

Ugh. Black flies? Why are you inviting them?

I can deal with 50-70 degrees at night. Just wondered if I'd need a sleeping bag. Answer is: probably.

I'm not much of a speeder anymore, and don't make a habit of cell phoning while driving. Just wanted to know if I should pull to the side of the road to call Bryan when I get lost in the wilderness! :D
