30th anniversary Mirage meet

Postby rm617 » Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:17 pm

Well, I thought i would throw this idea out and see if any Mirage owners would be interested. Date? Location? Of course I would vote to have it at the Quaker City meet, but that's because it's close to me. :burn:   Any interest or suggestions?

fall 2007 in Dade City Fl, at Richard's h-body museum :D

There are at least 4 Mirages in FLA , Roy in the Daytona area , Richard has one in his collection, I have one (in Tampa Bay) and i believe there is one in the Orlando area ....... Plus it would be a great reason for the others to escape the approaching cold weather up north :D

Of course this would have to be okay with Richard

Seriuously though i will try to make it where ever is decided , but i will need a year to get mine road worthy..... may not look the best but i will have it driveable

I would try to make it if it was within some sort of reasonable distance for me, well planned, and had a fair number of folks planning to show. I can tell you that I am not driving 1500 miles from here to maine and then having 3 cars show up. I honestly think there is going to be a geography problem with trying to put together anything that qualifies as an event for Mirages only. There are just too few cars spread out over too large an area. Even to plan it as a part of a larger H-body event is going to be a struggle.
To stand any kind of a chance of success this either needs to be held in the middle of the east coast or in the middle of the west coast and then you are probably only going to attract folks from that side of the country. Or as Greg said, as a winter getaway somewhere in the south. It should probably be planned around another larger event that is going on in order to be sure there are cool car related activities going on. We need to start planning now for next year and a lot of promotion needs to be done.
Example would be NC possibly Tennessee during the warm season. This should limit the journey to about 500 miles for a lot of people. But once again it needs to be well planned and people need to know that it is going to be worth the journey.
Although I enjoyed the company of those that did participate, I can tell you that it was pretty dissapointing to plan for several months to go the the southeast event, take time off work, drive 400 miles, and then have 3 cars show up and have the event consist of sitting around picnic tables for a few hours.
As former president of the Yamaha Vmax owners association I watched our events grow from 10 or so people to having near 100 bikes show up several times a year. We did our events in conjuction with other events like Bike Week in Daytona in winter or Thunder in the Valley in Pa. in summer. We would all stay in the same hotel and then participate in other things that were going on around us. Although not as rare as H-bodys, the Vmax is not a bike you see on every corner, yet we managed to create large gatherings. Several magazines showed up as the events grew in order to cover them. The Vmax went from a bike with virtually no aftermarket support to a bike that now has many manufacturers competing for its market.
Perhaps a large car show in the southeast in winter or the middle states in summer would be a good venue to make a splash. Carlisle Pa has some great events in summer.
We as a community need to try to create events that will attract 25 to 50 cars at a minimum in order to keep it interesting and worthwhile. If we keep putting together events with a handful of participants we will never put ourselves on the aftermarkets radar, and attract very few new enthusiasts to H-bodys.
Ok Im off the soapbox now.

If technology was a little more advanced people could plan a few different meets all over the country, on the same weekendm and link up with some webcams and laptops connecting to the internet, with cellular connections.

I'm with Roy, I don't think we can do a Mirage only gathering, it needs to be an H-body gathering with the 30th anniversary of the Mirage being celebrated! That way we can gather H's of all kinds together as well as many Mirage's as we can muster. That would give the whole segment a boost.

Hey the turkey rod run sounds great to me, because I live in Daytona! :P
I dont think it is far enough away to accomplish anything on a large scale, but if some of you guys want to come to Daytona that weekend I can plan a Bar-B-Q get together. I have plenty of parking and my Wife will be away that weekend!
So I could even supply a few bunks for the needy!
For those who dont know, the Turkey Rod Run happens on Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun of thanksgiving weekend. It is a huge Rod Run Show with over 6000 cars showing up. It has Hundreds of cars for sale, and acres of Flea Market to walk thru. It is held at the Daytona International Speedway.

Mirage Gathering

Postby heapster » Mon Oct 16, 2006 10:03 pm

Just a thought but the MATC building (Grand Rapids MI) would be the ultimate place for the meeting. Pat W. (a name that should be familiar to most Mirage owners) lives a couple of miles from there and we could ask him to attend(or cruise by his house untill he HAS to come out). OR if it was possible to actually arrange this gathering,, announce it in the GR Press and see how many of the MATC workers could be flushed out of the wood-work with an invite & info share....

Just some random thoughts,

I may put something in the paper someday regardless.

Also for those who don't know the old MATC building is less than a mile from the new Berger Chevy site

Hey Larry,
If you really moved up north you better change your sig. It thinks you are still in the North Georgia mountains. :D

looks like i may be able to get over to the Turkey Rod Run on Saturday or Sunday 11-25 / 11-26 not positive yet.

unfortunately if i do make it i will be driving the family's Volvo or late model Mustang. The Vega is not ready for the road yet and the Mirage is currently a short trip only machine. I really haven't gone through it yet.

Greg, let me know if you are coming and I will try to get together with you. I am going to the Rod Run on Friday, but I only live about 3 miles from the speedway.

well, I know why Richard couldn't make it to the TT-Run last year and I can't blame him. However, he lives only about 2 or so from Daytona. I know that he would be very interested in hosting all who will come over at his H-Body Museum and Resort. lol. Here is his telephone number if any of yo want to chat with him about this.

352-567-3826

I just heard he is considering buying another H-Body?????
