Rear Axle Play

Postby acstestinc » Thu Aug 08, 2024 1:48 pm

The rear axles in my posi rear end seem to have excessive play (in & out) that results in a clunking sound when the rear of the car sways side to side over bumps.

Anyone else have this issue or any input as to what it could be?

I've read that if the cone clutches in the posi get excessively worn that this could be the cause however I still have positraction.

Thanks
Paul

Fixed the problem.
Had 0.016" play on each side.
Made shims from 0.012" stainless using the c-clip as a template.

Nice a quite now.

Hey Paul, where did you put this shim in the rear end? If you added that to the "C" clip how are you holding that in? Harry

I installed the shims outboard of the c-clips.
Once the pinion is in the diff the shims are buried and can't fall out.
