According to my builder and other  info the 700 R 4 name/ designation was changed in later years as it is a fully electronic version the  4L 60 / 60 E and the  4L 60/ 65 E has a two piece bell housing ,,,all the same length same width as the other's   So now you can install with confidence, #1 You will need a wirring harness KIT, if you use a computer controled engine, #2 if you use a non computer controled engine, you will have to have a KIt set up for the application, You may not need a computer,,,as with further reading of member's Install's.,,,, Mike  Edit also the 4L60 /65E / 4L60 E model's have no T.V. cable to adjust, again it's a electronic control..May be a discusion for a kit for it later.,,,,,and electric speedometers also needed,,,Head's up :!: Mike

Mike, I pulled a 4L60 out of a 1993 Chevy truck and it had the same outside case as the 700R4 I put back in.
'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

The 4L80e is basically a turbo 400 with overdrive.

Sorry for the delay,I was on security detail for the grand/children a very satisfying job! ,It called babysiting,in some circle's,, But with this crew It requires a firm reasuraning voice, demenor, and some degree of child physcology,,, On the 4L80 E,It is just what Bill said ; It is a heavy duty trans,,, a 400 THM with overdrive usualy found in 1 ton trucks or 3/4 tons and maybe 1/2 ton, special order heavy duty towing. Depend's on what years but could be ordered in a lot of application's ,field service body trucks,,, motor homes,,.Snap on Truck breadbox Usualy behind diesels and the newer motors,Note my Son in Law told me the diferance in rebuilding the  700 R 4,,,,4L 60 E,,,, 4L80 E is "more money" involved than a 700 R 4 because of some diferrance in rebuild kits , replacing the convertor and the extra shift solenoid's,worn "valve body's"with up date kits to make it work more efficently with the  load's and heat imposed on the unit's.,,,,,,The newer models need to be upgraded on rebuild's ,ocasionaly in some,, not all, EDIT 8-8 07  The 4L80-E  But all in all the size of the trans is NOT  close, The exterior is reinforced with webing, The bell housing is "larger" some floor modifictions needed in the bell housing area also,, the The trans is longer, and the pan is deeper and longer,, Much like the HD manual trans .It is :hump: OVERKILL,,,,Hope this answered your question"s. Later I will give you some billing we did on a couple of tickets with parts replaced,, every rebuild is a little diferent, But I think you will get the picture.
