TH350 stuck in park.

Postby DjTy » Fri Aug 17, 2007 3:00 pm

well as the title says, what happened was:
-car was put on a flatbed to home due to starting issues which resulted to be a loose bridge on the solenoid.
-shifted ok, had 5quarts in the tranny of dexronIII

-at home after about 10 days I half-fixed the starter but on one of the days the +pole's feed to the starter accidentally short circuited.
it burned the -pole ground cable that goes to the chassis completely through and after that it took a good 10-15 seconds before I could get to cut the shortcircuit off...

I think in those 10-15sec the tranny cable acted as a ground as they say although I have a fat copper cable from the engine to the negative pole of the battery however I still suspect something happened to the tranny cable as suddenly without anything it almost won't budge from park after this incident.

there should be about 1gallon of dexronIII left in there while it drips now and then.

Questions:
-How can I check if indeed the cable is bad?

-How can you replace the cable? (in car while just loosen the the lowest part under the car at the tranny?)

l-Where can I find a decent suitable replacement on this Island should they have no replacement Monza TH350 cable... ?
-Chevy Monza '76 2+2 V8 262ci (old) -> 355ci (oil problem) -> 355ci (piston broke) -> 350ci (current) ... LOL
-Opel Kadett E 1985 1.2Litre (Back up, had a broken condensor :P still need to find replacement accelerator pump membrane...)

to check and see if the cable is bad. Jack the car up and block it up safely, then get underneath, disconnect the cable from the transmission and see if you can change the gears directly on the transmission. If you can you could move it 3 clicks to put it in drive, let the car down start it and see if it really works.

Better off first to disconnect the cable from the trans then try to move the shifter through the gears. If it doesn't, then its the cable. If it moves freely, then try moving the trans selecter ( where you disconnected the cable from) by its self with BOTH rear wheels up off the ground, secure on jack stands. Doug in AZ 8)

another look at what he said

 The ideal only works well if the life insurance is paid up!! but what he meant was if the car was on a lift with both front and back axle's off the ground and a person in the driverseat and one under neath the car,,,It would be allright,,,,,,,,#2Then if the car is on the ground with the shifter on the trans moved to the neutral position and the car started with a foot on the brake and emergency brake applied and or tire's bloced both directions it would show it would start in neutral ,,,,,#3,,,Now if some one with a great deal of trust for DjTy with a long arm would kindly put it in gear so he could cruise.,,,,,,LOL It make's sence to me now! Mike edit; take and do what Hy WyndingMonza say and jack it up and slide under with a 1/2 or 9/16ths I beleve and disconect the linkage and look if it is like mine a rod hooked to transdisconect it from the lever coming out of trans and see if trans will make the click's like he said,,,123 then have some one above care fuly unlock the shifter from park if it will not move  it is between their hand and the part you disconected  Mine I am sure is a rod if I am wrong shame on me on me,,Some have cable's I saw it last weekend but who knows Mike

I know this is an old thread but the following info may help someone.

I had a new '77 Monza Spyder and it kept breaking trans shifter cables. After the third time in a few short weeks, it broke again. Right in front of the local Chevy Dealer. The problem was a bad ground on the battery cable. It was loose on the frame. The mechanic said the car was grounging thru the shifter cable. He tightned the ground cable and replaced the shifter cable and the problem was gone forever.

Maybe this will help someone.
