Non-H Body, Has anyone ever heard of Serco Shfter's?

Postby cammerjeff » Sun Sep 02, 2007 8:20 am

I have 3 NOS after market shifters, one 3-speed and the other two 4-speed's. They appear to be from the early 70's. Made by "Serco Speed Equipment Reasearch Company" Seattle Wash.

All 3 are floor Shifters.

The 3 speed shifter is a generic install for a 3 speed Saginaw or Muncie.

One 4 speed shifter is also Generic installation for a Saginaw or Muncie.

The last 4-speed shifter lists it for a 1969 Nova, without console, Muncie or saginaw trans. It also includes a shifter knob in the shape of a Bowtie (not a chevy emblem but more like a rounded off bowtie). The 4-speed shifters are listed as "Magnum400" and has a P/N CY-69M

The apear to be quality parts, but no one I know has ever heard of the brand.

I and can't find any info on them. Or the company.

Any leads greatlly apreciated!!!

Do they bolt to the tranny or floor? Hmmm. It's the first I've heard of them. I'll keep my eye out on my compulsive internet research binging. lol. seriously though.

Actually they bolt to the trans. Looks like they use the same mounting style as a Hurst or IBT (stock) shifter. But thaks for looking for me. So far I have only heard from 1 person who had one back in the mid seventies in a 70 nova. He sais he actually liked it better than his friends Hurst shifter.

I work with some Seattle native gearheads - old ones. I'll ask around and see if they've heard of SERCO.
I've lived in Seattle area for only 20 years - I have never heard of that brand of shifter.
When I Google "SERCO Seattle", your two other posts pop up first(with the mispelled "Research") - cool. But, not a good sign to find anything web-related.
I might be interested in one for my 69 Firebird.
You might try putting an ad in the Seattle-area craigslist and see who pops up with some interesting nostalgia.

Thanks Tom,

The one for the 69 Nova should olt into a 69 Firebird, it has the same angled shifter as the stock Hurst 3-speed shifter from my 69 Sprint. I struck out looking on the web also. I like the idea about Seatles Criags list, thanks

I know that on alot of older (late 60's-70's) four speed cars there where a few different options on shifters available.

The name serco does not ring a bell but there where a few other options as far as factory shifters go.
Do you have a picture of it?
I know that some shifters that where oem where stamped with some initials on the side...like where "hurst" would be only three letters.

does it have any letters on the side of it?

I dontrecall the initials off hand but they are somthing like "ATE" or "ITA" or somthing.

Also is it a Push down lockout shifter? These where not the best designs and where known for being slow shifters.

God bless

Charles,
Just saw this. That's three of us 1st Gen Firebird and H-Body owners, here.
You really need to put an OHC-6 engine in one of those 'Birds, though. Do you really need TWO V-8 Firebirds???
Take the 400 and put it in your Monza. 8)
