LOL U.F.O. LOL Nah just kidding. That is a vibration dampner. NOT really needed for performace application. BUT if that is all you have you can use it. It will definitely eat up power though.

The 7.5 Do have them also... NOT ALL of them just usually the stick shift trucks. You got that from a 4.3 5 speed truck right? Jim

ANY 8.5 yoke will fit that rear from 1970 -2009 car or truck. Jim

Does the whole rear assembly - gears and carrier- need to come out to remove the balancer? Or can it be removed from the front? Thanks.
The only Vega's that only had a little rust were the ones still on the assembly line.

You can just remove the yoke...BUT you need to reinstall with just enough torque to seat the bearings and NOT over tighten them ...If you do you will burn the bearings up. snug it up and stake the nut with a pointed punch so the nut does not back off as it will not have the 150-180 footlbs it use to against the crush sleeve as before. If you do this you will be good. Jim

I'm tired of everyone telling me that a stamped steel(stock) center section 9" is stronger than my G.M. 12 bolt!
If you look at the mods necessary to make a 9" track worthy, you'll start to notice the merits of modifying a G. M. rear.
other than the removable center, I really don't see an advantage to a stock ford type rear.
after eliminating the c-clip axle configuration, is there another reason I should look at these units?
I have access to a "free" 9" ford housing, but can't see an advantage.
I think I'll grab it and sell it on craigslist to pay for my aftermarket 1350 series driveshaft/yokes :th:

I probably shouldn't take the bait, but the 9" ford is supposed to be stronger because of the extra bearing at the rear of the pinion gear. The 12 bolt is more efficient then the 9" ford. (less hp loss)

lol... Yah but the power still has to go through a pinion shaft at its thickest poni is 1.313...That is smaller than a MONZA / Vega rear 1.375 pinion shaft size...lol.

9" is only good in aftermarket form for power output in my book. to me it is just another 10 bolt rear. :)

HAve fun with it. :) Jim

I have a 76 Wagon with a 396 and a Muncie 4-speed. I bought a 28 spline posi unit for the 7,5 and am going to buy Moser S-10 axels. Thaught about getting a rear cover girdle. Do you guys think I will get any service from this rear or should I just scrap it and get a rear done. This car is not a track car just used for a little street action. Would it make it with drag radials.

Your 7.5 (build correctly) will do all you need to do and more for street action. You would be surprised how well the 26 spline version will work. The 28 spline will be a HUGE upgrade as Moser axles will provide more than you will ever need for the street easy and the only limit is the posi unit itself. The posi units spider gears will ALWAYS be the weak like in any size differential.

So the only way we can control that factor is the Richmond power trax, no slip type posi locker unit. OR a mini spool.

Good luck with the rear and I am sure you will be fine. :) Jim

Jim Thanks for the info. If I ever need any rear end work you have got the business.

I've been told that the Trailblazer EXTs with a V8 have an aluminum 8.625 dif. housing and pressed in steel axle tubes (I would think the are also pinned in somehow). Has anyone had any experience with these, and just how hard are they to find?
