Can the wider S10 axles be cut down and resplined? I've heard of it, but not sure if it was Ford or Chevy that it would not work on due to a taper, I think. If you are cutting and narrowing a wider rear, could you put a c-clip eliminator kit on it also? Last question for you. Let's say I dropped off a 4x4 8.5 disc brake rear with a posi (relatively cheap on ebay). About how much $$ would it cost to have an existing rear 8.5 axle narrowed? Mark
The only Vega's that only had a little rust were the ones still on the assembly line.

narrowing is about 100- 150 depending on how much we are doing on disassembling.

Resplining axles is just about a thing of the past. Not worth the time and they are never as strong because you are cutting through the hardened surfaces

Some will do the Ford and Mopar bolt in axles BUT c-clip ones are not cost effective.

We can shorten the rear to a axle length on the market or used by GM vehicles etc.

4x4 8.5 s-10 rear. IF it is a ZR2 that has larger full size truck bearing surface and we use the smaller 1.40 for most car and small truck application (it is a standard size used) ALL 12 bolt chevy rears and most chevy muscle car rears use this size.

Making sure the disc brake system will bolt on correctly extra 50.00 . AS long as it is compatible to what we are doing. :) Jim

So, naroowing is about $150, plus new axles about $150?. Basically tack on $300 plus to the purchase price.

Anyone narrow the GM 14 bolt rears from the full size trucks? Those are monsters!

??? 150.00 for the axle ?? where did we get that from? usually NEW off the shelf GM axles are 175-190 28 or 30 NEW moser off the shelf axles are 249.00
CUSTOM c-clip axles meaning made any length and bolt pattern with standard 1.40 bearing surface is 295.00 a pair.
Custom RACE axles with bolt in press on bearing system is 345.00.

I have just completed a 14 bolt 3/4 ton truck rear into a CAmAro 67-69 leaf spring rear. Here are your pictures. :) Jim

The picture with the dana 60 posi and 4.10 gear infront of the 14 bolt 9.5 should give you an idea of the size of the 14 bolt rear. These rears were also used in the SS trailblazer and ss 1/2 chevy trucks too.

youd be loosing some h.p. just to turn that big puppy wouldent you? would that even fit under a vega with a stock four link setup?(too wide for the upper brackets?) i think the 8.5 would be more than suficient for our little cars unless it was tubbed and huge slicks!

You are correct...BUT some people just do not care...They just want to be different and this certainly is.
PS the monza / vega brackets WOULD fit...I already checked the measurements. lol. :) Jim

hey monzaz do you ever build the ford 8.8 rears ive heard so many good things about them and they are as good as a 12 bolt(so they all say) and they seem readily available and reasonably priced. just thinking out loud chevy art

Built plenty of s-10 rears one is doing 9.90 as we right this in S. Carolina...lol.

Definitely GOOD thinking CHEVYArt. :) Jim

They are good but I will still take my 8.5 of the 8.8 ford. 8.5 posi unis are way better design.Than fords ...The clutch pack is inferior to the GM clutch pack for strength longevity etc .

The 8.8 is still a 10 bolt and it does have larger carrier bearings than the early 8.5 rears...1999 8.5 finally changed to 12 bolt carrier bearings as ford 8.8 does .

BUT down to the gritty I will build it and do all the time.

I can build monza width 8.8, 8.5 10 bolts all day long for a pretty decent price if you all want to deal with the brackets.

All depends on the set-up like new axles or used recon posi or new or mini spool rear. Good used gears or new.

Jim

BEARINGS AND SEALS ARE ALWAYS NEW...no exception there.

There are 2 different 14 bolt chevy rears...ONE is a full floater 10.5 the other is a 9.5 semi floater ...The 9.5 is the one I have created the camaro rear from. Jim

I feel like bashing on some over rated "speed equipment",
so I thought I'd pick on the ford 9" rear for awhile.
I'm tired of everyone telling me that a stamped steel(stock) center section 9" is stronger than my G.M. 12 bolt!
If you look at the mods necessary to make a 9" track worthy, you'll start to notice the merits of modifying a G. M. rear.
other than the removable center, I really don't see an advantage to a stock ford type rear.
after eliminating the c-clip axle configuration, is there another reason I should look at these units?
I have access to a "free" 9" ford housing, but can't see an advantage.
I think I'll grab it and sell it on craigslist to pay for my aftermarket 1350 series driveshaft/yokes :th:
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.

Hey Jim, On the S10 8.5 rears, what is the big circular thing on the front of the input shaft? Can you tell I don't know what it is called. LOL. The small 10 bolt rears don't have it. They have what looks like a regular u-joint. But the large 8.5's have the "big donut". Is that thing easy to remove? Or is it some type of balancer? Thanks. MArk

Here are some pic's of it, I still have not touched mine. Not sure what to do either.

It does look like a donut as you said, with a ring of rubber seperating it from the u-joint.
