Low horse power rears. They are called 8.0 rears and are found in the colorado canyons and trailblazers. The case aluminum center and steel tubes pressed in and plug welded ...NO pins... Remember they are not building race rears so they will not go through that extra processing step.

If you are loking for a unique street road rear they would look coold and be light...BUT the guts are basically as follows.
Posi is the same as 7.5 and 7.6 just has larger carrier bearing huds for better oiling and to keep heat down.

The bearing caps are even aluminum...lol :D woof
Axle spline is 28
pinion shaft was upgraded to 1.625 inner bearing and the same outer bearing and same yoke 27 spline can be used...BUT they change to a 3 lip pinion seal .

All depends on how far you want to go with your car. :)

Here is a link that is posted from the general section on decoupled torque arms. It shows the axle you are talking about, but with lots of modification. http://www.f-bodysport.com/decouple_torque_arm.htm Here is the list of mods made for a road racing 87 Camaro.

Rear Axle - one of a kind, custom made

Aluminum center section, typically found in Trailblazer EXT or anything else with a V8

8.625" ring gear

3.42 gear ratio

Torsen T2R diff

Moser 30 spline axle shafts

Moser housing ends, custom machined for more negative camber

9" ford wheel bearings

SAE 4130 axle tubes, 0.120" wall, custom machined and pressed into housing.

5 lbs lighter than stock 10 bolt axle, 50+ lbs savings over Ford 9", 12 bolt, and Dana 60's

Yeah, how wide is it? I'm guessing its wider than the S10 axle assembly. I've seen a bunch of those assemblys on ebay for a pretty good price - if they are the right width. Mark

How would you plug weld a steel tube to an aluminum casting?

drill a hole in the cast (just like they do in the cast iron centers to the axles tube ...these would be predrilled already ) then hit the weld in to the hole to the axle tube. :)

The new pictures show they have the tube plug welded just as I said. Look closely at the tube collar in the aluminum, you will see the little round dime-nickel size round plug weld. Jim
