Minimum Rearend width

Postby BadBowtie » Sun Nov 08, 2009 12:17 am

Hello, I have a 75 Vega GT (but its not home yet) and i was offered a deal on a complete ford 9" trough a friend. It is narrowed 48" flange to flange and i was wondering if someone could measure (or possibly know off the top of their head  ) what the minimum width that the vega can house under the stock body (no minitubs or hacking).

Thanks for your help

54.5" is the stock width; so 48" is way too narrow to use without tubs.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter

99 Saturn SL1- wife's car

Just remember the backing plates on the monza/vega there is MORE negative offset that a stock 9.5 x 2 backing plate used buy GM. they use the same backing plate backspacing as the a-body Wagons from 1965-1972. AND you can use them on your monza/vega 7.5 rear. BUT to tell you the truth they are probably harder to find then the 7.5 monza vega backing plates...lol. Sorry...but it is info that just thought needed to be known. :) Jim

I assume you mean AXLE-TO-AXLE flange width and yes that is narrow. But, the AXLE HOUSING flange to flange width is close.

So on a 12bolt if it is 49" backing plate to backing plate that will work according to the above pic. The axles would be out to about 53"?

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.

Here is some other alternative for the Fabricator. 57 inches is good with some backspace on the rims. I am in the process of building an 8.8 out of an exlporer cut one side the longer side and know the total is close to 57 inches and I will figure out the back space for the rims and have a 31 spline rear wich I picked up for 50 bucks----danfigg

Seeing that long list of rear end widths reminded me of the extra simple way I came up with the H-body width 9" that's still holding up my rusty 76 GT; I used a short(left) axle from a Maverick(8" and 9" 28 spline ones interchange) and a left one from a 71-73 Mustang. Voila-a 54.5" rearend without aftermarket or re-splined axles. Had them redrilled for 4.75" bolt circle and made a hub ring for the Maverick one to bring it up to the right size. 15x8 Corvette rally wheels with 225/60's fit perfectly under the rear, just like they do with the S-10 axle swap.

99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project

and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"

So how short can you make the rear end and still use the factory 4 link.

Well with custom axle we can go to the minimum BUT remember you have wheel wells to worry about so if you had zero backspacing which is kind of weird...lol you could knock off 2 inches on each side . What is it your trying to accomplish here? Jim

When you have time check out 454Spyder's mini-tub job. If I had not already done a full tub job on my Vega years ago, I would have mini-tubbed it. I love the way this one came out.... This Monza looks PERFECT!
