Broken Speedo cable

Postby Buscop » Sun Jun 25, 2006 9:04 pm

OK I want to know...I chassis dyno'd my Monza the other day. Had her doing 5500 RPM...now the speedo no longer works. So what did I screw up? The cable to the speedo or maybe the speedo head itself? Any suggestions to fix or replace the speedo? :?:

First off, what'd you put down to the wheels? I broke the speedo on my old monza and I thought it was the speedo but I ended up replacing the gear in the trans where the speedo cable connects. It was an easy fix. Maybe check that first. Your have the horizontal sweep gauge right?

A simple test would be to jack up the car and support it with jackstands.
Disconnect the speedo cable at the trans.
Try and pull the end of the cable out. If it comes out, you've broken the cable.
If it remains in place, have somebody watch the speedo while you attach an electric drill to the end of the cable and give it a spin (you may even be able to do this by hand with quick twists). If the speedo moves you have a problem inside the transmission. If it does not move the cable has become disconnected from the speedo, or the speedo itself is busted.

You didn't mention it, but is the odometer still working?

 The odometer is also no longer working...I guess I fried the speedo. Hopefully it was the cable. Will know soon. :(

When my speedo cable got fried and broken on the headers I used a late 70's Camaro cable. It was about five inches longer and gave me just the room I needed to deal with the header.
