3.11 1st gear sag

Postby crawfw » Tue Mar 26, 2013 7:59 am

I bought a sag that was supposed to be a 0 line (2.84 1st gear). Ended up shipping me the wrong trans, 2 line (3.11 1st gear). Just wondered what experiences good or bad members might have had with this trans with a mild build small block. I have the 3 line (3.50 1st gear) installed now with 2.93 rear gear (posi). Was wanting to get less wheel spin in 1st and 2nd with the change was my initial reason for the change. Had the 2.84 sag in a monza with 3.42 rear gear and really didnt like the rpm drop between 2nd and 3rd. Just wondering if there is an rpm drop on this 3.11 trans thats been noticed. The current trans(3.50 1st gr) has the rpm drop between 3rd and 4th which is more tolerable.

Bill, I have the 3.11 in my car with a 2.56 rear and 350V8. It gives pretty mice performance with the combo I have, decent first gear and lower rpm in 4th.
For your situation it's simple math to determine the rpm drop and overall gear ratio in each gear. Just multiply the trans ratio for each gear with the rearend ratio and then compare the percentage drop in each gear.

Yeah I thought about going with the 2.56 rear gear instead of replacing the trans. I will prob install this 2 ringer and see how she does then go from there. Could result in a rear gear change down the road. Maybe 2.56 or 2.73. Thanks again Clyde. Bill

This is the best of the bunch. I believe the 3.11 ratio was used in the Cosworth's.
