Bolt in 9 inch from Auto Weld Chassis anyone have one ?

Postby Smiley » Wed Apr 24, 2013 5:26 am

Looks like a better option than trying to cut the brackets off of a stock rearend or finding a Don Hardy 12 bolt.
Does anyone here have one in their Vega ? How was the fit ?

I have a Complete frame/suspension set up in my Acadian from Auto Weld. If Ron, the owner of Auto Weld, says it's a bolt in, then it's a bolt in. They stand behind their products 100%.

It doesn't look like they do, but it would be super easy to make work. For my Trans Am I have a Strange 9" torque arm adapter which uses 2 round bosses welded to the top and bottom of the pumpkin to mount their torque arm mount. Works for the stock F-body torque arm, so if the H-body one is similar it should work fine.

Ken you're not going to start butchering "Little Red" are you? I hope not that is a really nice time capsule you have there! I did a search for the Fo :censored: MoCo 9" third member that someone used to build with an integral torque arm mount and I couldn't find it or the 12 bolt Chevy :) that used to be available (Currie I'm sure) but I did find these http://www.summitracing.com/search?keyw ... =Ascending 2 options for a housing! I know that there are other options out there but you will have to call and beg (I'm sure) for someone to dig through a paper catalogue and find it for you and then tell you that your order will be ready in 6 mos.>2years   for "Only 1.2Million $$$$$" Harry

Another 12 bolt torque arm option is from Moser.
http://www.moserengineering.com/catalog ... mage/1958/

I used this style. It's a special 12 bolt casting for an 82-92 F Body appl (Camaro/Firebird) with the torque arm mounting holes.
It wasn't a direct bolt up with the H-Body torque arm, but it was pretty close.
A little modification to the H-Body torque arm and it worked fine.

Ok
this is an old post. Nobody ever really said they tried this from Autoweld.
I contacted them. They still offer this housing set up.
Has anyone installed one?
I feel its a fair price for a bolt in piece. Especially considering no one makes brackets.
Looks like they already have the R & D down pretty good.

For the record, those upper brackets on the housing look too short like they would cause wheel hop.

I was thinking on buying the same one, but trying to decide whether to back half it instead.
Mine is 100% stock right now, doing the front 5 lug s10 swap in the next couple of weeks.

I think GT350fme and Caveman used an Autoweld 4-link Vega 9 inch: http://forums.h-body.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19690&start=45

Monzamouse was making bracket kits, I got a set from him a few months ago.
I agree that the Autoweld upper brackets need to be raised, they may do it on request but I did not ask them.

I went thru some pics. Looking at the upper brackets. Honestly, to me. they appear just a little taller than stock. But, I am betting they are stock dimensions, since this is advertised as "bolt in".
I'm going to call em today, If we can work out details on these brackets, and a custom width, I will place my order.
I'm tired of fart n around with this.
Let you know how it works out

Thanks Smiley
I have been trying to find brackets for a while.
I think, bang for the buck. This Autoweld Housing is the ticket.
I'm tired of trying to figure out a way to do this on the cheap.
Sometimes I guess we gotta just step up and spend the dollars.
I have been putting this off thru the whole build. I would hate to break rear end or an axle and wipe out a 1/4 panel or worse.

Darrell that is the smartest way to look at this! $575 for a housing is nothing compared to R&R your quarter with an eBay possible clunker, that would cost a least $2000 grand here, for the difference you could have some SWEET upgrades in your 9". It is like the old TV commercial "You can pay me now or you can pay me later" The difference in the things you have to do either way aren't that significant compared to the alternatives! :th: Here is a couple of links for comparison. Harry http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/d ... /overview/ or the 9" http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/d ... /overview/

Yes I have a auto weld 9inch, yes it bolts in, but the car is not a driver yet.
I did weld a second set of upper bracket bolt hole extensions for the wheelhop thing but again the car is not a runner yet.
Sorry I can't say more.
