383 oil pan

Postby 1ton454 » Tue Jul 30, 2013 8:28 pm

I am putting a 383 stroker in a 71 vega. Ive been told only one aftermarket oil pan (milodon) will work only if u use stock rods. My rods are aftermarket with longer stroke. Anyone that can help me here ?

you should not have a problem with your set. probably most critical part is the head end of the rod bolts. if they are the good ones likme the ARPs they should clear the pan/ lay pan on with gasket and rotate the engine over and you can see if you are getting the clearance. suppposedly moroso(comp engineering) was going to make a new generation of pans for all model cars (sbc) to allow stroker clearance. you should give them a call. also call miledon. guy the works there had a stroker in his vega a few years ago. let us know what you find out. ps i have a 408 cu in SBC with miledon pan all set up for my vega. no clearance problem. art

Call Kevko oil pans. My new 383 came yesterday with their custom pan on it. Mine was for a 1 piece rear seal too.

Milodon decided after 20 weeks they were not going to make one for me.
The only Vega's that only had a little rust were the ones still on the assembly line.

These "I need a special oil pan for a 383 stroker" pop up on here regularly, but I don't get it. 25+ years ago, I didn't know any better, and slapped an OEM 1975 Monza 262 V8 pan on a 1972 400 SBC and dropped it in my 76 Vega. No interference.
Considering most 383 strokers use the normal 350 journal size, wouldn't you think that a stock 400 crank & rods would produce even more interference?
I never did figure out why the rod bolts didn't hit my pan.

Helped a buddy do just that, put a 400 in a Monza with the stock Monza pan, never had a clearance problem either.

probably moroso and miledon started the rumors so we would have to buy their oil pans. art

Here's a link to my new engine.

See the specs for the stroke. 3.8 inches. I think the Moroso only fits 3.4. So they are losing business to Milodon anyway. Plus I have a 1 piece rear seal. Both Moroso and Milodon are for the older 2 piece seals.
