Vega stock saginaw 4-speed bell housing - bolts up to a SBC?

Postby robert123 » Thu Oct 24, 2013 5:19 am

Would a SBC bolt riiiiiiight up to the stock Vega Saginaw 4-speed?
Or would I need to go to a wrecking yard and get a bell housing from a SBC that had a 4 or 5 speed?
Thank you

The Saginaw has the same bolt pattern as all other GM manual transmissions. There is nothing on the engine that determines what trans will bolt to it other than the need to have a pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft. H bodies do need a specific bellhousing though that were all cable operated.

I will expand a little on what Clyde is saying; there are two different bellhousings you could use to mate a SBC to your existing Saginaw 4-speed. The one from a V-8 Monza which only uses 5 bolts to attach to the motor(clearance issue with the upper left one and the firewall) or one from a 2.5liter 4-cylinder(commonly referred to as the Iron Duke) late Astre or Monza that has all 6 mounting holes but is easily modified. These both will require their own throw out arm but will hook right up to the cable release mechanism.
Or you could get creative and adapt the hydraulic setup from a 3rd gen Camaro, but that's far from bolt-in.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

So looks like H-body owner's have 2 options for a bell housing for a Saginaw 4-speed
(V8 Monza or 4cyl Iron Duke).
