th700r4 Speedo drive

Postby erik monza » Sun Nov 03, 2013 6:03 pm

I need help guys

I am about to lower into my monza a TPI 305 with a th700r4

now the th700r4 comes from an astro van with electronic speedometer

Do I get the van speedometer guts and place that behind my monza speedometer face to keep the look and live with the crystal odometer ???

Do I find an electronic speedometer with a original looking km counter and place that behind my monza speedometer face??

Do I find a gear output drive for the th700r4 that fits the cable drive i already have , and then every thing is fine???

What is that gear called , what is the ratio and how do I get it - do I need an angle drive as well??

Thanks from Erik

Erik, Your best bet would be to find the 700 tailshaft housing from a cable driven speedo vehicle. This way your not changing anything except the trans. part. You will need a drive gear to put on the output shaft & a driven gear on the adapter that match your rear axle ratio. There are charts available on-line to help you get the correct tooth count you need. Hope this Helps, Lorne

Erik, adding to Haulit's post here is a calculator (This website has lot's of good info) http://700r4.com/speedoCalc/speedocalc.shtml and like he said there are others, this board has more than a couple of links as well (use the search function) Harry

Thanks guys

On the eBay I found this: 700R4 Speedo ELECTRIC TO MECHANICAL CABLE Conversion Kit Convert Speedometer

Anybody have tried to fit this , I will write the company and ask if this fit into the electrical tail housing

Do I need an angle drive as well??

Thanks from Erik

You can purchase a speedo drive unit for a 90s caprice police car that features both mechanical and electric outputs. That is what I did when I put the 3500 into my 80 model.

Roy that sounds like a cool and handy piece can you post a pic for future reference, if you have/used one. I may need that when I install my 2004R along with an angle drive (?) :? Eric are you talking about the "Cable X Box" http://www.bobsspeedometer.com/1/120/cable_x_box.asp I believe that piece of convenience will set you back about $400 Thanx Harry

Thanks everybody

I want a speedo drive that fits into the hole where the electronic sender sits - in the tail end of the th700r4, I am suppose to get it next week

I just got my 305 TPI just to discover that my trusted starter from the 262 does not fit the 305 block and everybody tells me it is the same block, well it does not have the same holes

It is not the same oilpan as I need the dipstick to go from the side of the oilpan to the outside of the exhaust manifold on the left side , where the pan I got on the 305, the dipstick is in the block on the inside of the manifold, but will not clear the monza manifold as it is over the spark plugs close to the valve cover.

Luckily I discovered the the drain plug thread is ruined - - before I got the motor back in the car - - I still had to get the pan of, just after I got it on - - dam, always check the drain plug before installing the oilpan

Even small modifications have there challenges

Hi and thanks from Erik

If you scroll down this page to the second picture of Vehicle speed sensors the one you need is on the far right. It is for 90-91 Caprice police cars.

I got the gear set from Creekside2 on ebay they are the best and very helpful people.
It is easy to install and the cable fits right in there - no problems - now I have not been on the road yet, but I will compare it to my GPS for accuracy

Here is the letter from George

Dear eriksteen0861,

Thanks Erik: Your setup with 225/50/15 tires and 2.56 rear end will require an 18/39 gear set or a 17/37 gear set. Both exactly the same ratio.. But I would go with the 17/37 because the 37 tooth is more in the middle of the gear range, giving you more flexibility if you change tires later. So you will need my Ebay item number 310955957949 .

Thanks again,
George
