Chevy 8.2" rear- 2 series to 3

Postby monzam22 » Tue Dec 03, 2013 12:33 am

Hi everybody,

my name is Alex...and long story short I just acquired a diamond in the ruff- a 1980 Monza

My grandfather built the car in the mid 80s, it has a 350 built to be an old LT1 (corvette intake, holley carb and all), a Muncie m21, and unfortanutely a chevy 8.2" with a 2.73 gear ratio.

I got the car running the day after I got it, sounds great, motor is healthy, I took it for the first ride in over 20 years and everything performed like it should (driveline wise), and let me tell you the thing is a slug compared to where it should be.

I need to know what I NEED to change the carrier out, along with the ring and pinion please. Parts, what kind of labor, etc.

I know you need to convert to a 3 series carrier because you cannot put gears in it because of the 2 series.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am from a completely different world (own an 86 Buick Grand National, turbo v6 guy)

Thanks!

Is the 10 bolt 8.2 Posi or plain jane open non posi?
If it is posi and you want to keep using it you can BUY a spacer kit with bolts from me to make the 3.08-4.56 gears work on it.

IF you Do not have a posi I have those NEW and maybe a good reconditioned GM one on the shelf for slightly cheaper cost.

I stock 3.36 3.55 3.73 4.10 gears for the Chev 8.2 10 bolt rear also.
Rebuild kits everything.

IS this rear Narrowed or stock width camaro 67-69? Early Nova 65-67? or 68-72 Chevelle Width?

Definitely can help just need to know the info. :) Jim

Thanks for the replies guys!

I believe it is a plain jane open unit, stock width 8.2" camaro rear end. the rear tires stick out a bit from the rear fenders.

Jim, do you have a phone number I can contact you at?
