Postby RED73V8 » Fri Dec 20, 2013 3:24 pm

My 73Vega has a 350th in it and I have been thinking about swapping in a 200r4( Art Carr ? ) I have been told that it is physically the same size . but need to change the mount location on the cross member .Is this right or is there more to it ? I am sure others have done this swap , so what am I up against? Thanks Don

Don,

Yes, you'll have to fab up a new rear crossmember, as the rear mount is about in the location of a Turbo 400. If your fab skills aren't all that great, someone else offered this site: http://www.powerbyace.com/Catalog%20pag ... onents.htm . They offer a rear crossmember.

The driveshaft should work, you may have an issue with the speedo cable location. I ran mine through the passenger compartment and drilled a hole where it was needed, but you could use a 90-degree adapter, too.

I tried using my OE shifter, but the lever under the floor contacted the transmission case. A cable shifter is in order, I use a B&M Pro Ratchet.

You'll also need a kit to control the converter lockup. My trans guy installed a kit so it only engages in overdrive above 50 mph when the separate power switch is turned on. There are other options, too, I've seen.

It is imperative that the TV cable is correctly adjusted at the carb, otherwise you could burn up the transmission. Your trans guy should be able to help there, or Google it.

Chuck , thanks for all the imfo as it really helped . I have a B&M Mega shifter in the vega right now . I was thinking (when money is available ) that I would order a Art Car Tranny - he doesn't like the lockup and sets it up accordingly . He explains why on his website -California Performance Trans- Not cheap - but worth the money . I also want to change out the 350th so I can go to a steeper rear gear .I am running a 355 , would love to go to at least a 373 or 390 etc

This site may help you out and it has a good section on the TV cable setting as well. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml I haven't found the diagrams of all the different cases yet but the 2004R is 6" further back than the THM350 and the 'Glide has the same OAL (overall length) as those and the Saginaw and the same 27 spline output shaft. There is some good reading on the parent board http://www.h-body.org/ and http://www.v8monza.com/ Harry
