700r4 best stock converter

Postby 72vega383 » Sun Jun 08, 2014 8:15 am

Hi I am installing a 700r4 in my vega from a 91 chevy pickup 2wd.

I am just wondering if the stock torque converter for the truck would be alright?

My car is a street car. I race it about twice a year. I am only worried about getting out of the hole quick like a stoplight situation. Too end isn't much of a concern. I have 3.73 rear gears.383 stroker with maybe around 400/400 torque max. Vega weight is like any other stock weight vega with a v8. The 700r4 has a 3.06 rear gear so I don't want a converter that will make it any lower or act lower.

Converter #1
I understand that the truck converter is about 1400 rpm stall speed. This number will decrease with the weight of the vega being less. Although it will increase with the added torque. What should I end up at if I put it in my vega?

Converter #2
95+ s10 v6 converter or 86 corvette converter. These have a stall speed of 2025. Then again these values change with the difference in weight and torque. What should I end up with if I use this one?

On the highway the speed limit is 55 mph(90kmh) I would be turning just about 1800 rpm in 4th od converter locked

In town the speed limit everywhere is 30 mph(50kmh) assuming that it's in 3rd gear that would be 1500 rpm. 90% of my driving will be in town at this speed.

In 4th I will always be locking the converter so therefore stall speed is irrelevant I believe. Therefore do I want a stall converter that will be under 1500 rpm? In order to minimize heat and slip.

I am not a racer so I feel that a stock type converter will do well in my application whether it be the s10/corvette version or truck version.

Thanks in advance.

Without knowing a bit more about your engine combo it would be hard to say. I have a stock converter in my 700r4 but to be honest I am not sure what it is out of. I can tell you that it is to tight for my liking and it is coming back out next week in favor of a 2,800 stall speed lock up. I am hoping that along with a higher stall speed it will also be a bit looser at idle. As is I have about a 350rpm drop when going into gear and that makes for a pretty weak idle with my combo.

I am planning a similar drivetrain, 383 with a 700R4 trans. I can't help you with stall speed, but glad to read the trans will fit. Were there many issues fitting it?
