am i right on gear ratio?

Postby beakerztoyz » Sun Mar 08, 2015 4:49 pm

hey all I popped the dif cover off my parts car today its a 77 monza.. anyways the numbers stamped on it seem to indicate to me i should take the 41 and divide it by 15 which gives me a 2.73 ratio, however someon wrote on both gears and that writing kinda makes it seem like it's 41- 14 i should be dividing which would be 2.92. fairly sure my sunbird only has 2,56's but it might be 2.73. I dunno either way I'm pretty sure it aint worth the effort to grab these ones but was wondering is it even possible to change the just little gear? not sure who or why woulda wrote on them..if it was the wrecker i got the car from y bother refilling the rearend like they did the car has no motor or trans. here's some pics what do u guys think am i doing this right?

I would be inclined to go with the numbers actually stamped on the ring gear rather than anything someone wrote. The gears are a matched set, you can't just change one.

Those both have the same number written on them "Y114" (in toolmaker crayon, paint-marker) so that is the "guy" who ground and fitted them identifying them as a "set" The pinion should also have a number stamped, but easier yet is count them and do the math from there, ie: 41/15=2.73:1 for that combo. I haven't come across an H-Body with that gear yet, I am more confident that you will find it to be 2.92:1 or 2.56:1 gear set but according to Bryans site all gears were offered (well the emissions sets anyway as 3.42:1 was the "Zoomie" gear) Harry

I believe there was a 2.73 ratio available for the 7.5" rear but not sure exactly what engine/trans/year would get you that.

ha ha ya that would make sense, I couldn't really figure that y out as I assumed they would all be numbers so I figured it must b a 4 that someone kinda shortcutted.

You must not have looked at the last picture I posted it appears to me there is a bunch of numbers then a slight space then a 15-41 ( I was kind of unsure on the space) but thats where i got the 15- 41 from, you can see them clearly in the picture have I used the correct numbers? Thanks

That is the tooth count on the gear set.
