input shafts the same?

Postby hervegawagon » Thu Jun 04, 2015 10:50 pm

Are the input shafts of a '74 sag 4-speed and a '77 b.w. 5-speed the same? I am in the process of doing a swap from stock 4-cyl,to a 215 buick v8 with a '77 5-speed and 7.5 rear. I would like to drop the motor in with my 4-speed while I rebuild the rearend (previous owner welded spider gears) it is my wifes driver so I think the 6.5 rear will last while I get everything else ready.

Hey good luck with the swap! You are most likely going to run into drive shaft length issuses.I'm not sure about input spline count.

It most likely has the same 10 spline input shaft, later t5's were upgraded to 26 spline but assuming this is the stock trans I would bet they are the same as a Saginaw.

Spline count is the same(10) on both transmissions, but they are different lengths and require different driveshafts, trans mounts and even shifter location. the later cars had an interchangeable plate for the shifter, but you might have to cut the floor on the 74.

Spence, just to clarify, the input shafts are the same length and it's the overall length of the trans that is different. So the trans should bolt up to the bellhousing fine but there will be other mods after that.

Sorry for the confusion; the "they" in my first sentence is in reference to the trans itself, not the input shaft.
