th350 crossmember

Postby 77nighthawk » Mon Jun 08, 2015 7:32 pm

Does anyone in the group make a th350 crossmember with the torque arm mount on the crossmember? I want to use a th400 in my Monza build. If nobody makes one that is bolt-in ready, I have 2 crossmembers that I can modify, but don't know if either one is the one I need.

I think this one is a little damaged, but useable.

Hooker used to make a TH400 crossmember for the later Vega body, but it did not have a torque arm provision.
It is probably easier to make a new one from scratch.
A TH350 is a better fit overall.

The car I have was a factory 4 cyl/4 spd car. I am going to install a sbc V8 and auto tranny. For mock-up purpose, will one of the crossmembers in the pics work to get the tranny in the right place? I don't mind making a crossmember, just want to make sure the tranny is in the right place, so the headers and other stuff fits too. I do appreciate any info given. thanks

My car has the early type trans mounting points, the later type is easier.
If it was me I would keep it a manual trans with the V8.
1971 and later Muncie 4 speeds and B&W super T10's have the speedo cable output on the passenger side which is better for mounting a torque arm bracket.
The motor mounts will determine the trans location front to rear and side to side.
You want the radiator and the front of the block parallel to each other and the trans pan parallel with the rocker panels.
What headers are you going to use ?
Long tube headers will help determine the height of the trans mount, while short tubes offer more flexibility and ground clearance.
Some people will make a dropped crossmember instead of using a BFH to reshape the firewall+trans tunnel for clearance and driveline angle.
A stock crossmember may act as a shelf to hold up the 400 while you get the engine in place and the headers on.

This is the Hooker TH400 mount for later Vega/Monza, not too complex.

Maybe you can get some ideas looking at how I did mine. Scroll down the page.

Both of those setups look pretty clean. Thanks Smiley and Zeke for the pics/thread. As far as using a standard tranny, I told my other half that I was bringing home an original 4 speed car, and the reply I got was: "Great! Another vehicle that I can't drive!" So an automatic it is. The headers from what I can tell are hooker 2129. I don't know if they will work with the subframe connectors I'm going to use, but I guess I'll find that out when I get there. All part of the fun, right!

Oh, the car is a 79 hb.
