Got a 1973 Chevy Vega GT hatchback -- seems to be original and came with 4cyl, 4spd and a/c. Never driven the car.
I did take off the rear axel cover and put in new gear oil. Also painted the cover flat black -- looked real good in there. Thinking about
doing the easy S-10 axel swap -- but seems like I need the 1975 and on bigger 7.50 ring gear. So 6.50 rear ends are no candidates
for the S-10 axel swap?
Here's the photo details [near as I can make out numbers and letters]:
1. G53 or O53 = on the right rear of the axel housing (next to the cover)
2. SO = on the cover itself (right-side by the bolt -- at 3pm)
3. HAC 194 = on the right axel tube; in front; about 3" from carrier; 1/4 inch tall letters.
Seems like 1971-1975 Vegas all had the weaker 6.50 ring gear. Then in 1976 they went to the bigger 7.50.
Rear axel Codes: http://www.v8monza.com/Rearaxle.htm
HA 1971-75 2.92 6.50"
HC 1971-74 3.36 6.50"
HMC 1977 2.92 6.50"
So, the rear end is a 6.5? And can anyone 'splain to me what the HAC 194 means?
Thanks a lot.
