bearing lubrication question

Postby 71GTKammback » Thu Dec 17, 2015 12:31 am

Pretty basic question but what lubricates the outer rear wheel bearing? Is it the same lube as a front wheel bearing or does the gear oil in the rear end case travel down the axle tube to the bearing to keep it lubed? Not sure if I should pack the bearing. Thanks

If your rear is from the same era as the car, splash from the centre section is what lubes them. There are some newer ones that have a seal at the centre, but those are not typical and way new! Harry

If you can see the rollers they are lubricated by the gear oil,
if not they are sealed and do not require packing like the front tapered roller type.

I can see the rollers once the outer seal is removed. Axle tube sure seems dry but i guess that some oil would creep down the carriers and penetrate the bearings.
