Tailshafts housings are not interchangeable between Powerglide and TH-350. When you say "early Powerglide" are you referring to the cast iron case 50's ones? I presume not. All aluminum 'Glides are actually "later" style. Not the best trans choice for a street car, as they require a loose converter and steep rear gears to feel even the least bit "sporty".
Virtually indestructible and the #1 choice by a wide margin at the drag strip(I won't use anything else), but no fun for just cruisin'.
Also, you didn't tell us what year H-body you're building; makes it hard to make recommendations for a rear end. If you asked about swapping tailshafts, I would assume it's a 76-up torque arm car.
The "fleet"-
