8.5 S10 Torque Arm Mount How To?

Postby Mark in INdiana » Fri Apr 01, 2016 9:06 am

Hello all. I'm planning my V8 76-77 Vega project. 383, Tremec 5 speed, 8.5 axle, clean, street machine. A lot of great information in this forum! The last big piece of information is an axle torque arm mount. Been searching for and have not been able to find information on the actual fabbing of a center torque arm mount to an S10 8.5 axle. I'm thinking of a weld-on mount design rather than a bolt on. Does anyone have photos, or website, or fab shop information that you can share? Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi Mark, If you have some tools and fab skills, try looking up Grand National torque arm, or torque arms in general and try to come up with something that can bolt up to the cover housing. The other end can be mounted to a bracket attached to the trans cross member, or motor if it has the mounting holes. Possibilities are almost endless. I have the reverse problem in that I will need to find a different way to attach the front of the arm later when I replace the motor and trans.

It takes a skilled welder to be able to weld brackets onto the cast housing.
Here are two companies that build torque arm suspensions for older muscle cars.

They may be willing to sell you the components you need for your install, although your torque arm will be shorter than anything they normally make.
Google "torque arm suspension" and view the images. There are no shortage of ideas.

Mark,

Here's a thread of what a buddy of mine did to put a torque arm on a 12-bolt:
