Carrier/gears

I read somewhere you need a different carrier to go from 4.56 ring and pinion to 2.73 gears? Is this correct? it's a 12 bolt from a 72 Chevelle.

I don't know the breakdown for a 12 bolt but for a 7.5" 10 bolt there are 2 carriers, one fits 3.08 and numerically lower, the other for 3.23 and numerically higher. It's probably similar for 12 bolts.....

There are three for a 12-bolt. You'll need a "2-series" carrier. Might not be the easiest thing to find. I have a chart at home with measurements on each of the carriers. Probably should be able to Google it.

jaloi, You will need to know which carrier you have to know for sure. As the gear gets lower [higher number] the pinion gets smaller so 4:56 can be made fit a two series carrier, with the available spacer or "thicker" crown gear. But a two series gear will not fit a four series carrier. If that was originally a 4.56:1 Chevelle you will be needing a carrier. If that was a highway blaster [2.73 or stiffer] car you will be able to do your change. Either way you will have o pull the cover and take a look see. Harry

What would be a good ratio to run on a 26" tire? With a 23.5" tire I'm running at around 3,000 rpm's at 50mph.Gping to the bigger 26" tire.Has 4.56s in it now.Want to be able to go on the highway at 65 or 70 without redlining it,lol 2.92s maybe?

With a 26" tire:
3.42 will have you spinning 3100 @ 70, 2200 @ 50
3.08 will have you spinning 2800 @ 70, 2000 @ 50
2.76 will have you spinning 2500 @ 70, 1800 @ 50

This is assuming you don't have an overdrive transmission.

I think I'm leaning toward 3.37.They make a thin gear that I can use with the series four carrier.Should be a good all around ratio.Eventually I'd like to get rid of the 4 speed and put an auto w/od in it....
