Can anyone tell me if a Saginaw torque tube housing will attach to a non-torque Saginaw 4 speed transmission? I have a Saginaw torque tube I want to put it on a Saginaw that came with the standard tail housing I need this info asap. Thanks all, Charles.

I am reasonably sure the tailshaft will swap on between torque arm transmissions and non torque arm ones.

If you don't have the correct h-body tailshaft housing, it's not all that difficult to fabricate a bracket that will attach the torque arm to the trans crossmember.

I have a Chevette 4 speed Saginaw transmission. Is this the same as a Saginaw 4 speed in an H body? Thanks.

The "Saginaw" 4 speed was used in many GM cars including H-Bodies and the Chevette. Now the most notable differences would be if your H-Body is an 1975 or newer Monza/Skyhawk/Sunbird/Starfire, a "Cosworth" or 1976/77 Vega/Astre as these would all need an H-Body specific tail shaft housing for the easiest torque arm hook-up, the earlier Vega/Astre's won't need that, and then there were a "S T Load" of gear ratio's available as identified by input shaft "rings" to identify the first gear ratio, the correct one will reduce the chance of breakage, slightly! Now outside of these two considerations they bolt into nearly any Rear drive GM from the mid eighties back with the correct bell housing and that is another discussion. Harry

The pictures I have seen of the H body Saginaw 4 speed have external shifting. My Chevette Saginaw 4 speed has internal linkage. ????

Wouldn't a 4-speed from a Chevette be the same Opel sourced trans that was in some early Vegas?

All Saginaws had external linkage. All of the shift forks are located on the side cover vs other transmissions that had reverse on the tailshaft

There was a "70 mm" trans (distance of the centerline of the mainshaft to the counter) used on the Chevette that had an internal linkage. Very light duty, the 1.6L probably stressed it.
