4l80E swap

Postby 6D9 » Mon Jan 02, 2017 3:13 am

I searched and could find no real info on anyone doing it. Has anyone done the 4l80E swap in a 71-73? If cutting was involved how much? Thanks

I would do a 200 r4 as its the same basic size as a turbo 350 like "waybad" did with his LS1 swap. The 80 and 80E are big and as you stated your making more work for yourself, i'd checkout waybads project journal if I were you. He has a lot of info about the whole LS1/200r4 swap in it.

PS - if your interested in selling the car before you get into it pm me.

Thanks Todd I have access to a decent 200r4 from a buddy. Problem is I dont think it will deal with the power I want to put thru it. It will get a power adder a some point and thise 200's get crazy expensive when putting good billet parts in them. The 80E cant take it in damn near stock form. Its a tough choice. I have been thru waybads build thread multiple times. He did a great job. Can't remember what internal mods he did tho with the trans.

Guy on the Cadillac forums told me that the top of the line 200r4 is about $7000, he went with a 4l80E.

If you do use a 4l80e , 3 important tips...............use only a GM or Wix filter..... Temp not over 240*............. make sure your cooling lines are not reversed or kinked. The trans need good flow to function correctly.

$7000??? I built a totally billet, rollerized internals with parts from CK Performance for an Albq gentleman for his L-88, nitrous powered 65 Corvette and it came out to just under $2300. That trans must have some gold or platinum in it. Full billet pro street unit from CK is $3799.

I have been pushing 500hp thru mine for over 10 years and I only have a billet forward drum. This is in a 3600lb GN.

Red clutches, carbon band, billet servo, billet internals, rollerized, .550 tv bushing, .300 Int/Rev boost valve, billet pump internals. Build labor is the same no matter what parts are used so as a builder of performance transmissions since the mid 80's, I don't see how people can charge an exorbitant amount for these. I hear the same thing for the dodge 727 trans and I build the same unit for out-of-towners that the locals in Albq pay out the butt for. Amazes me that $7000 "gets you a better trans" than $3500 + - when it is all torn down, they have the same exact parts inside. Been there, done that with a few TCI units and a couple Monster units.
