I have a picture from the "manual" of both rears [now if my new Hard Drive would recognise my new phone I could post that up! :bang: ] perhaps the "Torque Arm 6.5 inch " was slated for the '75CW Vega and deamed too weak for the CW and used up in lower power 2.3L's. My '78 manual shows omly the 7.5" so if it existed it was for only a short time ['75 & '76?] I am however certain that I owned one, that would have went staight to scrap 30 some odd years ago.Harry

It just seemed that with the introduction of the H "special" cars introduced in 1975 one of the new improvements was the 7.5" torque arm rear. It's the same with the solid front rotors, ventilated ones were never installed in Vega's despite being installed in the other H bodies after 1975. I assume that was also a inventory issue.....

Clyde, just to Clarify the 78 & 79 Monza & Sunbird wagons did get the Monza Style Vented Rotors if they got the V-6 engine, I assume the 78 Monza S hatchbacks with the V-6 option also would have them. But that last statement is just a guess as I have only seen 1 wrecked 78 V-6 Monza S in a yard in Virginia, and I didn't know enough to look closely at it.

I never dreamed my post about axles would go this far but I really appreciate all the information from all y'all. I ended up buying a 79 Pontiac Sunbird for $800.00 and am just going to swap my Monza rear end for the Pontiac. The sunbird is in fair shape but the interior is pretty bad- might keep it or might sell it. Here is a picture of it-

Yeah, by 78-79 I can see them using the vented rotors since officially the vega was over by then. It was specifically the vega that didn't get the vented rotors although I believe they did get the larger rear drums in the last two years of production 76-77

" I read that the s-10 axles are 1/16th shorter than the vega axles . . . "

Not to hijack, more for some clarification of what's being "said."

Do S10 axles really slide right into the stock Vega rear end and mesh with the stock gear set inside?

If yes, is there a way to deal with the additional 1/16" either by grinding/machining or using some sort of spacer?

Are the S10 backing plates needed with the Vega or should the stock Vega plates be used?

We're trying to get a rear end together for a V8 transplant in the '73 Vega; we have a two wheel drive drum brake S10 rear end along with the stock Vega. Kind of wondering if we can work with what we have somehow or should we look for a Monza rear end as well for whatever parts might be needed from that?

Any help would be great !

Thanks—

As for the spacer question, thats how we solved the problem. We used old 5 lug drums and cut the center out of it and ground the edges it evened it up to make it somewhat smoothe to get the clearance we needed. Seems to have worked. Good luck. Peace

This may help with the backing plate clearance issue. I had 1/8" plates made up to go between the drum and the axle face. covers the whole faced and no rubbing problem. Hope this helps.

S10 axles do not fit a Vega rear (those had 6.5" rears). The S10 axles only fit H bodies that have a 7.5" rear. Generally the 1/16" difference is not a big deal. Sometimes there may be some slight filing needed on the backing plate but it's really a matter of what brand parts you are using and how much tolerance stack is built up into the particular parts you have. I had no issues using new Moser S10 axles.
