Yes. You also need 76-80 monza backing plates and s10 drums. The axle seals may need to be tapped in slightly in order to allow the c clips to be installed. There may be interference between drums and backing plates which will require minor clearancing.

Not hi-jacking, the thread but, ... I read that the s-10 axles are 1/16th shorter than the vega axles, here is our dilemma... The axles are in with new s-10 backing plates and s-10 wheel cylinders. The backside of the lug studs are so close to the wheel cylinders on both, that although they do not rub, they are awefull close, so close, you cant get a credit card between them. I am not sure what to do. Grind the lug studs or shave the wheel cylinders slightly to increase the clearance. Any ideas?

If they do not rub when you bias the axles inboard then don't worry about it. I have never heard anyone mention any clearance issue there. Sometimes the back of the drum can rub the backing plate, although I had no issue with that either. I think the problem with the drum rub is just a matter of differences between brands of drums etc. Could be slight differences in manufacturing tolerances.

Thanks cj, it looks as though the wheel cylinders are not sitting flush with the backing plate by about 1/16th. I think we will remove the backing plates and "persuade" them to be flat from poor stamping and go from there. The drums are not rubbing, so were good there. The distance between the axle hub backside where the lug studs are and the wheel cylinder was alarmingly close.

I have a 1975 TC that is in the middle of a five lug conversion. The front end is completed but I am having a problem getting the right axles for the rear. I have bought one set with a 26 spline that did not fit and another set with a 28 spline that did not fit either and have been advised that what is needed are the stock Monza axles with a five lug pattern instead of the four lug. Is this doable? Thanks-

What was the problem with the 26 spline axles, they should work.

The correct 26 spline S10 2 wheel drive axles slip right in. Because you have a 75 which came with the small rear brakes you will also need new backing plates and all the hardware. The stock Monza axle does not have a large enough diameter hub to redrill to 5 lug.

Been there and done that but have been told they don't fit. I don't have the axles at my house but I will get them tomorrow and get some pictures of them and post them.

When you say the axles don't fit does that mean the spline won't engage in the spider gear, or they're too long? If they're too long, they could be from a 4x4.
Or is it possible that there's a Vega 6.5" housing in the car?

I talked earlier with the mechanic that is doing the work. He told me that the axle itself is slightly smaller in diameter and the splines are too large,

Stopped by Ace Hardware this morning and bought a cheap Vernier caliper. Measured the diameter of all the axle shafts and came up with this. Stock 4 lug Monza axle shaft is 30.0 mm, 5 lug 26 spline axle shaft is 33.0 mm, and 5 lug 28 spline is 34.0 mm. All that being said and done the actual housing on the car will only fit the 4 lug axles. I assume that I will need to get a larger housing to accommodate the larger 5 lug axles but really need advice on all this. I have a disc brake conversion kit ready to put on as soon as all this works out. Thanks

Something doesn't add up, this swap has been done 100's of times with no issue like this. Does your torque arm mount to the rearend with 2 long bolts ( 7.5" rearend) or does it mount with 4 small bolts (2 on top and 2 on the bottom, 6.5" rearend)? There should be no difference in axle splines on any 26 spline 7.5" rearend. Are you sure you have axles out of a 7.5" S-10 rear?

Ok, after rereading your post you said this is a earlier Vega with a Monza rearend, are you sure this is a 7.5" Monza rear? It sounds like you may have a 6.5".

S10 backing plates will not work with the Monza housing, the offset is not correct and the drum will not fit. Also, the wheel cylinder will hit the back of the wheel studs, if the axle will turn at all.
You have to use the Monza/Vega 7.5" backing plates... I found this out the hard way when I pulled the S10 housing out of my 72 Vega and installed a Cosworth housing.
It did not come with backing plates, so I tried using the S10 and ran into all kinds of problems.
On the positive side, it did force me to convert to rear disk brakes :)

Cheers,
Tim

Yes, I used later Monza (76-80) backing plates to upgrade my rear drums. Of course this has nothing to do with the axle fitment issues he is having, we need more info on what he has.
