Is my rear axle tapered or straight ?

Postby SeniorSavage » Fri Jul 27, 2018 10:07 pm

Theres no longer any tag to identify my rear axle and the new wheel bearings appear to have seated long before they got all the way into the axle .. is it possible my axle is tapered and I have the wrong bearings?

Thanks.

Do you have a photo? You may have a "repair bearing", which is wider than the standard bearing so the rollers ride on a portion of the axle further away from the center of the car. The idea is if the axle is worn in the standard location, this would place the bearing on an unworn part of the axle. But it may make it harder to push the axle in far enough to install the C-clips in the differential.
