T-50 5-Speed Shifter

Postby mikebrow74 » Tue Jul 31, 2018 4:59 pm

Inspite of the discouragement of many that I have talked with, I am still considering replacing the 4-speed in my ‘78 V-6 Spyder with a stock 5-speed T-50. I have located a couple complete units, one a low mileage,close ratio unit. All the boxes that I have looked at have the top of the shifter arm missing. I don’t know how these come off but it appears there is rubber between the lower and upper lever pieces. It does not appear that these two components were never serviced separately. It appears that at least one company makes an aftermarket shifter assembly for the T-50. Just wondering if anyone has a stock shifter assembly they are willing to part with. Also I see them in Black and Chrome versions. Which is correct for my ‘78 Spyder?

The one in the top pick is correct for a Monza with a v6. The bottom one will for sure fit a Vega. I have never seen a Monza with a four banger and a five speed, so I am not sure which style that would be.

You mention close ratio unit. I would really like to know the T-50 variants. I have heard that some of them are different in ratios, but I have three of them and they are all the same, but that could be by chance.

I have an NOS Monza style shifter for a T-50. I would be interested in trading for a Vega style in really good condition. It doesn't have the chrome sleeve on it, just like what is in your picture.

I assumed that the first picture was missing that upper round piece. Are you saying that is not the case? I have seen pictures of the round upper piece in both black and chrome. Here is a picture of the one I am actually considering buying. The lever looks square and unfinished to me.

My research shows that a wide ratio was used on 4 and 6 cylinder cars. First was exceptionally low but work well with the 4 & 6 cylinder cars. The close ratio T-50 was used with the v-8 cars and possibly the Cosworth cars. It can be identified by a groove on the input shaft. It is also said that the close ratios are stronger than the 4-6 cylinder versions.

Well I just made an offer on this transmission and it was accepted so I will be picking it up soon. I'll have some more information when I pick it up. I would like some input from somebody who has a 76-80 H-body with a factory T-50 5-speed as to what sticks out of the shifter boot. Pictures would be great.

There are two different shifters. The top one looks bends forward more, where the one in the bottom pic is more straight up. Not sure if they are different in your pics but they each one looks to be a different version. I will get a pic of the two versions side by side.

Item #2 is depicted as a single piece. Seems strange to me that anyone would separate the upper and lower pieces.

Sorry not the best of pics, but here are the two different shifter types for Vega/Monza. The one on the left is from a Vega. Cosworth and regular Vega were the same shifter. The one on the right is the NOS one I have for a 6 cyl Monza.

V6 and V8 engine mount about 4 inches further back then the 4 cylinder.
On the 4 speed cars, the shifter rods are shorter for the 6 and 8 cylinder.
The bent shifter for the 5 speed V6 will allow the shifter to come through the floor in the same position as the forward mounted 4 cylinder.

My project is a 1978 Monza V6, currently with the factory 4-speed. I want to swap that out for the 5-speed. I was told that this T-50 was out of a 1976 Cosworth. It is a wide ratio box. Tim, it appears that I will need a different shift lever to make it fit my '78 V6. A couple of additional questions. These all appear to be missing the top section with the threads for the shift knob. Were these intended to be separable? I guess I'm in the market for a complete shifter. Anyone have one for sale or trade?

I also got a cross member with it. Are the cross members the same between the 4 and 5 speeds?

Hi mike,

Yes, you will need the shifter for a V6 T50, otherwise the shifter will not align with the opening in the floor.
On the 4 speeds, the trans crossmember is the same, it just mounts in the rear most holes in the frame of the car.
I don't know if the T50 crossmember is the same for both 4 or 6 cylinder, but I would think it works on the same principal.
I believe you will also need the prop shaft and torque arm for the V6 T50 as well, as they would be shorter then the normal ones.

Dang, I was hoping this would be a simple swap. Just to memorialize my research.

Prop Shaft - 7818594, 76-77 M20, M29, M38 & 78-80 (231A) M20, M33, M38.
Prop Shaft - 7825686, 76-78 M75, & 79 (231A) M75.

Torque Arm - 349561, 76-80.
Torque Arm - 366180, 76 231 M20, M29, M38, & 77-80 (231A) M20, M33, M38.
Torque Arm - 366181, 76-78 M75, & 79 (231A) M75.

M20 = 4-speed manual
M29 = 3-Speed Auto TH200
M33 = 3-speed Auto TH350
M38 = 3-speed Auto TH350
M75 = 5-speed Manual BW T50

So I have a ‘77 Skyhawk donor car with V6 and Auto Trans. Before I start cutting and welding, does anybody have a driveline, torque Arm and/or Shifter for a 5-speed for sale or trade?

This is a torque arm I acquired for my T-50 install. It is the short one and I got it along with a short driveshaft to fit the 5-Speed only. My question is, is this a factory weld to shorten the length or has someone shortened it in the field?

I have semi given up on finding a complete 5-speed shifter with the chrome sleeve. I did pickup a shift lever out of a Nissan pickup that has a similar sleeve. Still debating on whether to press the sleeve off and probably destroy the rubber or to just cut the lever a few inches below the sleeve and weld it to the shift lever I have.

Can someone with a 5-speed measure and give me the distance between the middle of the upper bend and the top of the shift knob.
