10.5 clutch for 153 tooth fly wheel/ clutch cable

Postby jim327monza » Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:48 am

Will all stock 153 flywheels accept a 10.5 clutch pack? If not what are the differences?
I am using the 4 cyl bell housing (360162). The pass thru hole for the clutch cable measures 0.60 inch, the bushing on the cable measures 0.054 on the small step and 0.870 on the large step. I think that another member posted about a similar bushing but can not find his post. I bought this cable as a "V-8 Monza/Vega Clutch Cable". We all know the issues with aftermarket parts for our cars. The difference in size from the hole to the bushing makes for a very sloppy fit and gives the clutch a "bad" feel. 76 Monza with the strait pull pedal. I would like to resolve the cable issue when I up grade to the 10.5 clutch. I have tried to post pics of the bushing but have not been successful yet. I will keep trying.
As always, Thanks in advance for all the help.

Jim, a 153 tooth flywheel should accept the 10.5" clutch. As far as the clutch cable, never heard anyone have any issue with the cable fitting in the hole. There should be a small part that fits in the hole and a flange that seats against the bellhousing. Did you mean to say the small end of the bushing measures .54" vs .60 for the hole? That is only .006 difference which sounds right. I don't think you meant .054? The part that fits in the bellhousing shown in this pic should slide in the hole without too much slop.
You can email me pics if you can't post them here (file is too big most likely). cjbiagi@yahoo.com

There is also a specific way to adjust the clutch on these cars. If you would like I can post a write up I did on this.

Clyde, my typo, It is 0.54 . I will e-mail you the pict. I can not reduce the file to get it to up load. I have read your post on adjusting the clutch and found it to be very helpful. I put the 9 inch clutch when i switched from the th350 to the WC t5. Now that the 262 has been replaced with the 327 I need to up grade to the 10.5. I do not like the cable that is in now. I do not remember the total length. will try to measure and post length this afternoon.
Thanks, Jim H

Ok, that's what I figured. I did send you the write up again before I saw this, I'd be interested in what you find out as I have spent a lot of time with clutch related issues and questions over the years. I don't think the cable arrangement is necessarily bad as some people say, but it is important to understand exactly how it works and how to adjust it. Also, the cable should be thought of as a consumable item, they do not last forever even if they are not broke, I have also devised a way to easily lubricate the cable without removing anything.
