Straight up diff conversion

Postby ozzymoose » Mon Aug 07, 2006 3:43 am

Still doing some research on the 75/80 monza..Was wondering if there is a straight up differential conversion for these things, that have 5 lugs, disc brakes, and a bigger centre. Dont mind if they are inch or 2 wider each side, would see that as a good thing as it would give you more room to mount handbrake mechs ect' and brackets are easily transfered over and inward offset wheels are not too hard to find. Any help would be great, as with any plan the devil is in the detail. Cheers Moose

Bump lol..... :D

Im gathering by the lack of replies there is nothing even close that can be used. lol..... Was hoping there was a disc brake 12 Bolt Posi diff that was close, is there a GM 8/8.5 inch diff??.......oh well i will look at the local stuff here in oz. MMMM the bt76 diff out of a commodore looks close. Does anyone know how wide these Monza diffs are hub to hub? cheers --- Moose

I've seen people use 12 bolts on a regular basis, so It can be done... I know you have to get narrowed axles, but not sure if that's garage fabbed or can be purchased in the right size.

I also don't know if the torque arm can be fabbed into the 12bolt of if you'd have to go with a 4 link setup.

There isn't anything from other cars that fit in these cars that I know of. The mounting system is completely unique to these cars. As far as width, the right year S-10 should be correct since their axles are the right length, but they are leaf spring mounts. I remember from a while ago that one of the Mopar rears are the right width, but again you would have to graft the mounts from your h to get it in.

Cool thanks guys, S10 it is then by the looks of it!! Think i will try and find one with one with the 8.5 centre(been told elsewhere some came in that size). As for the brackets shold be an easy enough swap, just will have to find a novel way of ataching the torque arm--- cheers all --- Moose

Sydney Competition will build you a 9" to suit the torque arm 3 link monza rear, no cheap but there the only guys I found that would touch a torque arm rear.

But I just spent $3,500 on my 9" in the holden a few months back, dont wish to shell out another $4,000 on the monza.

craft differentials will also look at a 9 inch conversion BUT again the price is around the $3700 mark .....and an "F" body tq arm is different to ours that means a 9 bolt conversion (shorten axle tubes/axles) is probably out of the question as well :(

They will make the housing and adaptor to suit the monza.
Dont mention camaro etc and dont try adapting camaro Arms etc.
Modify everything to suit the monza. Dont modify the monza to suit the diff.

i spoke to craft
prefered method of conversion is a 9 inch
the f body rear end was just another idea .....not sure about the logistics of that swap however IF it was to be seriously looked at it would be modifying the diff to suit the monza
not the other way around

at this stage i am on bodywork ,i estimate it will be another 6 to 8 months before i even get up to the stage of considering rear end options
