The autocross school, that is.

20 positions and I got the last one..... luckily, by sending my fee in by paypal just in the nick of time. I bet the folks that sent their fee in by snailmail are cussing me.

March 15 AND 16

I can have the trans swapped by then but I don't know if I'll get the rear main leak addressed in time...... haven't even looked for a seal yet.

Worse case, I can always throw some header gaskets on the '79 Trans Am and try it if the Vega is down. They won't allow the Jeep Rubicon or the '62 Bug to run.

First order of business for the Vega is a Battery hold down device ........

From the Cosworth site, I have some part numbers for a neoprene 2-piece rear seal replacement. I don't have information on what they fit, except for one. [edit: found applications]

Fel Pro BS13241 [Chevy 250 six cylinder - same as JV728]
Fel Pro BS40052-1 [Vega 140 rope seal]
GM 3792463 (Chevy 60* V6)
NAPA/Victor JV728 (Remove two tabs from one seal half)

Thanks for the part numbers, Chuck.

I definitely want to try the neoprene seal.

I'm contemplating a complete Fel Pro gasket kit from Advance Auto Parts..... you never know when you might have to pull a head or intake, etc... but I'll get the neoprene rear seal, too.

We have our first event of '08 tomorrow. I'll be in the Camaro for most, (if not all), of this season. It may be an up hill battle with the SS Camaros, and WS6 Firebirds running the same stock class as the Z-28's and Trans Am's. I'm slowly working on the Vega, but I don't intend to rush it. Anyway, air your tires way up when you run that school. Chalk the side walls and check the tire roll. Add or bleed pressure as needed. On R compound tires, I ran 44 F 40 R. I was on 185/60/13's. Also, keep an eye on the Hoosier website. They generally sell off a bunch of their older autocross tires really cheap this time of year. Maybe around April first.

Oh..... btw.... the local SCCA will allow me to run HS even with the H.E.I. They said I couldn't run STS with the H.E.I. either.... but they don't care for a local event. Just have fun!

RPOZ29.... how'd you fare on your first of the season?

Glad to hear it. I was thinking you could update/backdate in STS, but it looks like you can't. Other than a Miata, and an MR-2 that I've run, my Vega was the easiest car I ever autocrossed. Wheel hop is a bear, (but can be eliminated), but the car's balance is great. Just remember to air your tires up. Take some chalk, a lumber crayon, anything to mark the sidewalls and check for roll. Remember this; No car ever built goes faster in a turn than it will in a straight line. The sooner you can get back on the gas, the faster you'll be. It's all car control.
My event went alright. I'm disappointed with my driving, but overall it went well. I had treated my tires with Formula V but they may not have needed it. They felt a bit "greasy". Plus, the Torsen T-2 that Z-28's have is a joke after a few years, it starts to think it's an open rear.
My buddy (Mike "Junior" Johnson) on Speed Channel's "Setup" has won 2 of the 4 races he's been in. His mechanic, crewchief, whatever from Setup ran our event last week driving an '06 Z06 in A/SP. What I wouldn't give for that kind of usable power. His talent would be nice too! Good luck, and let us know how the school goes!

Even if it rains on Sunday, run the event. You can learn a ton about control in lousy conditions. Just give the car a bit more time and room. More than once I have beaten most of the FWD and all of the RWD cars in an event in the Vega. Rain is the great equalizer. Keep us posted.
