S#*#!! Windshield cracked!

Postby vegatex » Sat May 17, 2008 10:17 am

Last night I was trying to replace the little plastic clips in the windshield channel that hold the windshield reveal molding on the car. I should have done this before I tried to paint, but I didn't want to goop them up. The windshield had been replaced by a previous owner, and apparently that person (before Sherman owned it) just installed the windshield by gooping around the existing clips with sealant and RTV. So they were glued in there and very difficult to get out, but I got the ones at the top out and was working on the lower row when the the friggin windshield cracked! So now I not only have to find a shop in the DFW area who can get a Vega windshield and install it properly without charging me an arm and a leg, but I'll have to repaint the roof after the job is done due to all the chips and scratches from digging out the old clips and replacing the glass. If anyone in the area knows of a good company, please let me know. I was sooooo close. This is a huge setback! :( :cuss:

Sorry to hear about the windshield,,,I ordered some replacement clips and screws to replace the metal pins or screws on some of our cars ,,Lke your windshield,,,,, mine was replaced,,,and a  over generous amount of windshield urethane adhesive present,,,and could not retreive loose or replace missing pin,,screw pin from body with the windshield in place and the same with the clip's removal and replcement.,,,,I suspect a H 2/0 leak over the passenger side sunvisor meaning a small hole, to be repaired,,So. to repair it I will have to R'n' R the windshield to correct all of the problems' at once,, Hole Pins and clips.,,,, :bang: Mike

Hmmmm that sucks.... as a journeyman autoglass installer I always tell my customers to paint the car with the windshield and back glass out if at all possible. But if you have a broken stud it can be replaced by using a stud welder (unispotter) by using an adapter designed for placing studs. And before you continue you can then check that the clips actually fit the stud. Once everythings good then you can paint the car. Another option is to use a stainless steel wax coated screw like they use on early chrysler cars but the mistake everybody makes is to over crank the screw and then your clip is way to tight making it difficult to put the moldings on. Any glass shop that's been around for a while will be able to hook you up with the screws. DON"T EVER TRY AND PUT A SCREW IN THE PINCHWELD AREA WITH THE WINDSHIELD INSTALLED IN THE CAR. I've been doing this for 25 years and the result is usually the same, new windshield required! As for finding a good installer in your area it's a coin toss. Best thing to do is ask people who have done work on there cars and actually look at their installation. Remember price should not be your only consideration. Like my shop for instance is middle of the road in pricing. We don't gouge like some shops but again we are not doing it for free either. Quite often someone things they got a great deal only to find out the next time it rains they have pop cans floating in the rear floor well area. Or like the Acura we had last Wednesday, we took the moldings off and the windshield fell out of the car! Can you image being in that car as it's rolling over at 70mph on the interstate off ramp.
Best thing to do is ask questions. Any shop can talk the talk but ask them if they can use Norton foam on the glass as it improves the appearance of the job from the inside as well as the outside. Urethane should be applied to the glass as well as primer to block the sun's harmful rays as the sun will actually kill your seal to the glass in short order, hence the windshield that falls out. Your body should be primed as well any any surface rust should be ground down and E coated before pinchweld primer is applied. Your windshield was originally installed from the factory in poly sulfide which was a fore runner of urethane. It's holding power was approximately 250psi. Modern urethanes hold around 700psi and have excellent shear strength. If your shop wants to use a tape kit run away as they only hold about 15psi and on that note I don't even no if they still make them it's been so long since I used one. Also silcone is a no-no around a windshield installation as well as liquid nails. Don't laugh I had to replace a windshield that was installed with that sh#t cause someone got a deal! Materials that they use play a big part as well. If your shop of choice is using low buck installation materials maybe you should be looking else where for an install ( Essex is a pretty descent urethane, it's a Dow Company product and it's never let us down). Remember it's not unusual to be at a car show and see a car that had a windshield installed 20 years ago as car people keep there babies longer then the average grocery getter. So good lasting materials and installation techniques are extremely important. At my shop we treat each car as if we were going to own that vehicle and put our families in it. And as such where ever you take your car they should feel the same.
A trick to finding a good shop is to look up the Windshield suppliers for your area and give them a call. Ask for their road sales guy, then ask him for some recommendations. The are usually up front and will steer you into a good shop. If you here the same name from a couple of different sources your onto something. I hope you score a windshield in your area but if you don't send me a PM and I'll see what shipping a windshield to your area would be worth.

Good Luck, Kelly

Well, the $220 windhield is certainly a consideration if I don't find anyone here locally who can order one for me. As for the install advice, I sure didn't plan on doing a windshield before I painted, but I'll be sure to take care of all that when I get it out! I don't think any of the studs are broken off. I'm just hoping not to find any rot under the glass. Worst case, I'm hoping I can buy the windshield and have it shipped to a local shop who will do the install for me. I've seen what a bad job looks like and the problems it can cause, so I hope to see this one done right!

Firehawwk 002 is right on the money,,When I was involved doing body work in a couple of body shops,,,,some of us used a Glass guy with a knowlege of the bussiness. And would ocasionally call a larger glass supplier for additional info,,and a recondmedation for local installer,,AS for me I can do my own from experieance,, Since I suspect the leak is metal missing or rot,,, will wait and pull the W/shield out when I can get the car inside the shop for metal replacement and paint as the car will be open to the enviroment a day or more depending on what I found in the way of the sealing surface,,Another one of firehawk002 Good info is the holding power, of the adhesive's ,,,cutting out a unknown substance can ruin your day especialy the grip,,of the material,,, Razor knifes with the adjustable depth and break away replacement,,or a good start,,but the profesional glass tools for removing the material are avalible,,My second favorite is the piano wire with two T_handles Caution is the key,, remove the A-Pilllars covers,,,,,AND the top headliner conecter clanp to prevent cutting and scratching,,inserting the wire into the wind shield's adhesive is a job,,, as the kit I bought from a supplyer had also a roll of wire 50 foot, and a ice pick device with a hole for the wire in the tip,,,,pushing gentaly beside the glass,,edgehalf way up the side post and slightly in under the glass with just the tip removing a little material and feeding the wire until you get it started,,then ataching the wire inside you add the other handle,,, (has allen set screws) you cut the wire two to three foot, conect and saw the material out,,Yeah It will Make you nervous,,but go slow and use a a little liqud soap for cooling ,,if you have no help,, get two extra people one inside,,, 2nd outside,,3rd one lubricating and if you go to fast it will stress the wire and will break. My other favorite tool had a handle for one hand with a replaceble almost 90 degree blade,,,and a T- handle with six inch's of cable conected near the blade,,,At the body shop,,,,,, They call it the butter cutter,,, it slips in to the void, obiously and cuts some window's out with a couple of stitches to the hand,,brokenblades  and looks good in the tool box.,, :cuss: ,NEXT TO THE BANDAIDS  But will cut with a high degree of confendence,, the material at hand ,,,,,,depending on the situation, some times realy good,,,,,,,And yes there will be blood,,,So if you like the odds contact a profesional,,,get a estimate, or proceed,, Mike 8) 8)

I'm probably goingto have to go with the windshield Firehawk has (ugh! Shipping from Canada!) since nobody can seem to find one through a US supplier. The good news is a local shop will do the install when I get it for $125.

repainting a car should always have the windshield cut out just to check for missing metal ,those clips are designed to be disposable as sealer gets on them whatever you do :( ...specially the guys that fitted glass 20 years ago !!!

as for cutting the glass out i used some old hood release cables (the thinner the better ) think i used 3 or so to cut all of my glass out ,you do however need a second person to help you with this method

If anyone is interested I found a company that has NEW H-body windshields for $229.00 plus $50 shipping.

Last year (2011) I ordered one tinted with antenna for my Astre Wagon. Shipped immediately and came in a great shipping box right off the UPS truck.

Don't think your going to best that price or shipping.
