Oil pan mods

Postby AusRs » Fri Jan 15, 2010 3:42 am

Ok It appears the engine i fitted to my car has a split bore (not concerned as it was only a stop gap engine until i saved up more $ to do a decent engine )
I am thinking at this stage of fitting a crate motor to my car ,a 350 hp late model roller cam engine with a 1 piece rear main seal
questions
has anyone done this
can the oil pan from the late model engine be modified (ie hammered ) so that it will clear the steering ?
Is there an easy option ?
lastly do i cut up my Monza sump and the vortec sump and make a custom pan ???........remember this is Australia and h body parts are really hard to come by !

reason for thinking late model roller block is the zink (zddp issue) in modern oils and flat tappet cams plus it is easier to convert to a roller now than later
Is my thinking reasonable or am i not thinking right ?

I would modify the stock pan, not that hard to do. :th:

cut the back off of it through the rails ? or cut the front section off where the pan is made with the steering mods ?

modify the front area of the pan to clear the steering linkage. This was a popular mod in the early '80s when people were putting together budget V8 H-bodies , i.e. not buying stock V8 pans or deep sump aftermarket pans.

Depending on the motor mounts and the placement of the engine (height) some of these pans needed little more than "clearancing" while others were cut and sectioned. Anyway I would concentrate my efforts there if I was in your position rather than mess with the rear pan rail and risk screwing up the rear sealing.

Thanks for that link ,I should have used the search function shouldnt i ! ,looks easy enough to do its just the dipstick that is the hard part ,i suppose in all honesty to go roller block i could cut up my stock h pan and use the bits on the crate engine pan .......as i guess i would not then ever re fit a 2 piece rear main seal engine !

I have a few days off and am going to Bali ,will have a think ,work out my finances and make the decision when i get back home

Thanks for all the advice and help !

I have heard that Milodon will custom-make a pan with the right-hand dipstick. I've also heard they're not quick in doing it, either. Might be worth a phone call, or in your case - an email.

i would do the mod on the proper pan for the newer block, if you dont think you will ever put an original block back in the car you can sell the stock monza pan and probably get a real good price for it in AUS or europe on e bay as hard as they are getting to find!

You can also buy a Moroso pan designed for the H-body and a one piece rear main seal.

I will be modifying my own soon too. I plan on having about a hundred buck in it and that includes buying the pan to modify!

I have one of those pans off ebay suppose to be for a v8 vega (wrong) but its a good mod candidate.

I wonder some times whether i an stupid !

I re looked at the link supplied and the modding of the vortec sump appears simple ,just slice a section out of the bottom and weld up .........i was making life to complicated
seeing as the dipstick on the vortec engine is passenger side i may even be able to use that as well ...........may get a little hot though .note to self always check oil when engine is cold !

Hopefully i can get this modded this week and re fit the engine next weekend

On my first Vega, I ran a stock pan, just knocked a couple dents in it at the edges where the drag link hit it, and removed the zerks from the drag link. Then, a few years later, I bought a Monza pan. 8)

here are the instructions that come with the transdapt front engine mount kit. in the column on the right of the page youll see how to cut the pan to clear the crossmember. use the proper pan that fits your new crate motor and you wont have to butcher up your monza pan. http://tdperformance.com/content/pdf6436.pdf edit ok i see now you looked at the v8 monza.com link good that gives you the same instructions for cutting the pan. good luck!
