air pressure in rear slicks

Postby chevy art » Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:48 pm

i run goodyear slicks on my 67 nova. they are 31x14x15/ i use tubes in them and they are pinned. i usually run around 11 to 11 1/2 lbs air in them. one time i ran 10 1/2 lbs of air and the car felt a little shakey before the eigth mile and i dont remember on top end by quarter if i had made the complete pass or let off. how muck lower (than 11 lbs) could i go with air pressure. any real time experience out there with this important question thanks art

I knew a guy with a top alcohol dragster and they ran 4.5 pounds. Probably doesn't relate to a heavier door car, just throwing it out there. A lot of people are switching to radials because they are more stable on the big end.
Any one can restore a car but, it takes a real man to cut one up.

A friend of mine used to run a '64 Nova with 30x14 slicks running low 10s. He would run between 4.5 and 6 psi in them. He ran both Goodyears and Hoosiers. He liked the Hoosiers better. This was almost 20 years ago ( ) now.

Drag slick air pressure is usually a compromise between maximum contact patch and top end "wobbles". This would indicate that those among us with large gonads might get away with less pressure

Art- I've actually been to Caribou Maine! It's about a 6.5 hour drive from Halifax. Back in the 70's I had a girlfriend from Bath New Brunswick, about 25 miles southwest of Caribou; that place is waaaay out in the "boonies"!

The Loring Timing Association is using the old base for land speed racing http://www.lta-lsr.com/HOME.htm. They have an event the weekend of July 31/August 1.

Got 9x28 Hoosiers on 15x7(?) S10 4x4 wheels, I run 10 psi cold, and I believe I'm right at the low limit. A wider wheel and tire, especially a tire and wheel that's closely matched as far as width, will work on considerably lower pressure though. I've run as low as 8 psi on McCreary GT series dirt tires on the street. 8)

Art- The Dragstrip in Mirimachi N.B. runs every couple of weeks and is only about 2.5 hours(150 miles) due east from Caribou. Here's a link to their website/schedule- http://www.miramichidragway.com/schedule.html
look in the schedule for an "ADRA" event; there will be cars from all over Atlantic Cananda there chasing points.
If you want to drive a bit further, here's the schedule for all the ADRA tracks- http://www.maritimedragracing.com/id19.htm
Some of these other tracks are quite far from Northern Maine; The next closest one in Prince Edward Island is easily 5-6 hours away.
I'm pretty lucky in that I'm less than 2 hours from my closest track in Greenfield Nova Scotia, and my cottage at the other end of the province is only a half an hour from Cape Breton Dragway.
