Can Anyone ID These Ford Pinto/Mustang Tools

Postby cammerjeff » Sat Mar 26, 2011 9:42 am

Long Story Short,I recently stop at an Estate Sale on the way home from work, I saw a couple of old late 30's to 50's Fords near the Barn. There was a box of Various Suspension tools that I got for the opening Bid of $50.00 I wanted the Snap on ball joint press, and the pickle forks in it, but there were a few specialty tools that I have no use for. I Know what most of them are for with the exeption of these 6 tools that are marked as follows, Rt and Left rear Pinto, Mustang & Bobcat, Rt & Lt Front Mustang, and Rt and Left Front Pinto Bobcat. With those markings I am think they are for 71-80 Mustang II, Pinto's and Bobcats. I thought they were ball joint removal Tools, but others I have showed them to think they may be Jack Bolt tools for bending the Control Arms for Alignment. Does any one know for sure? They were made by the Otc, and that Company is still around. Any help is greatly apreceated as I do not know many Ford Guys, and the ones I do are not into Pintos' or Mustang II's.

I see one for sale on ebay, says ball joint tool. I went out and looked at the mustang II stuff on the front of my 37 chevy chassis, but I'll be damned if I can see what you would do with it. I'm pretty sure they had leaf spring rears so I don't where they would be used there either. Sorry, not much help.

They're used to tighten and loosen muffler bearings.

Thanks for looking, I was told on anouther board they are used to hold the upper control arms from moving to much when loosening the alignment adjustment bolts, but now that you mention it my only experiance working on a Pinto was back in the early 80's, and I remember that it did have a leaf spring rear suspension, so no ball joints or upper control arms on the rear. So the mystery continues.

Jeff- I suspect your first guess is correct; jack bolts for holding/bending the control arms during alignment. The "front" and rear" markings could refer to the 2 upper control arm bushings, not the ends of the car.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

Looking at an old Chilton's manual, there is an illustration of the front suspension. I see an angled tab on the chassis next to the front control arm bushing that looks similar to the angle of the screw on that tool. The size of the round opening on the tool looks large enough to fit over the control arm where the bushing would be. Yes, I would agree it is for sliding the upper control arm in or out for adjusting alignment. Sure would beat using a pry bar!

I think they are a reminder device for h-body people. If another h-body fan hears you talking favorably about Pinto's, they slip this tool over your ear and every time you say nice words about any Fords they tighten the screw one turn and if you keep it up it eventually screws into your brain.

I saw a restored or survivor-in-really-good-shape Pinto on I-5 in north Seattle a couple of weeks ago. I was the big bumper version with the all-glass hatch.

Thanks for the effert every one, I will probebly list them as alignment tools, and the front and rear bushing for the front control arms makes more sense than front and rear of the car as I was thinking. Thanks Again.

So, if I tell you that I probably have more miles behind the wheel of an all glass hatchback '79 Pinto with the big bumpers than all my H bodies combined, I get your version of the bug in Checkov's ear eating my brain?

No, Considering most of us drive the GM equivalent of a Mustang II/Pinto and I drive the equivalent of a Bobcat myself. I get along well with the Mustang II owners I meet out Cruising, and last Summer I actualy beat a white 302 powered Pinto with my V-6 Sunbird Wagon. We stapped at a local park after words and looked each others cars over for awhile. His was in much nicer shape, and the V-8 Conversion was done well. But my 3.73 gears with the 200R4 trans, along with the fact he smoked his tires won that round. And I actually have alot of miles in a former girlfriends 79 or 80 Bright yellow Pinto Pony. And a Friends 77 Bobcat wagon that was still in the shipping crate it came in. So other than the fact they are Ford products, Nothing against them. They get about the same respect on the Street as a Vega/Astre does.

I just think that the Late 76-79 Vega bodied cars make great street cars, with the Torque Arm rear Suspension, Low Center of Gravity and easy V-8 and Brake upgrades. The Pontiac Versions even had Firbird seats & Steering wheels available. I have suprized alot of people with it on Curvy Roads, including a former boss in his SRT8 Charger, he had me until he had to brake for a corner, I just had to lift slightly, them I was gone!!!!

I had a Mustang II with the German v6 and tranny in it. I hated working on it, it seemed to have different size of bolts on every bolt any specific bracket. It took 3 or 4 different sized wrenches to just take the waterpump off and that was after all the other stuff in the way was removed. At that time there were even some Metric and some SAE, drove me nuts I was constantly changing sockets or Wrenches.

My sisters Monza could seemed like it could be almost completely disassembled with 3 wrenches - 1/2, 9/16, and 5/8. We even coined the 1/2 - 9/16 wrench the "Chevy Wrench"
