Let's talk rear springs.

Postby ROB » Mon Oct 31, 2011 2:18 pm

I see it recommended alot to use 3rd gen Camaro rear springs. Well I looked at the specs for the Vega, and it shows to have 140 lbs of force. Now the Camaro only has 107 lbs, but is longer. So using a calculator, with cutting down the Camaro springs, it comes out to 141 lbs,. So what am I missing? From what I see, the end result would be the same.

Hi,
i think the point of using the camaro springs was more to lift the rear just a bit for rake effect.

Are they progressive? IE: get stiffer as they compress

No, I compared non-progressive to non-progressive.

i use them to raise the back up i have had them in three cars a 72/74/75 vega. and i use the rubber pads on the top side from the camaro allso.

this car has springs out of an 82 trans am with two set of the rubber pads stacked just to fit the 235-60x15. when i go to a smaller tire i will pull one set of the pads out.

i know it looks stupid in the front i have not done the 5 lug swap yet its in the works.

the tires fitting has EVERYTHING to do with the correct backspacing on the rims. tire has to be centered right/left -in out, in the wheel well opening. 235 will fit width wise no problem, I have 245's in the rear on 8 inch rims.

I have 3rd gen trans am rear springs in mine, but mine are multi rate ones, I dont know what the rates are but also used the rubber isolators because I cut them way down to get my car where I wanted it ride heigth wise.

which side did you cut them on,, the wide spaced or the tightly spaced coils? also
I have pm-ed you about the frame section that you had for me,, do you still have it?
if not, it's cool just getting started and if you don't have it I will start making repairs.
thanks TC

4.125" back spacing, rims are 4 inch backspacing out of the box, I then dusted .100" off back of rim pad and took another .025" off the drum face so its 4- 1/8" total. I had to make a bunch of small changes to get to the final dimension wanted, as the wheels are not availble in the right diemension unless custom ordered and the price was double.
