spam, spam, and more spam

Postby spencerforhire » Sat Nov 17, 2012 9:09 am

I see by the proliferation of this crap that the spammers have found a way around the process of joining our forum. When I checked in this morning in the usual way(view new posts tab), I was greeted by a whole page of it.
How do we keep this stuff off? Do we need another layer of security to join up?

Another 15 or 20 in the last hour; now they're not just starting threads, but replying to old ones. Please make it stop!

I just joined your forum - found it looking for a Vega to build..... I also run a forum and I dropped my spam by 99% by making sure I review EVERY request for membership. I control who is accepted and who is rejected by first looking at the IP address of the requestor and only if I recognize that it's a legit ISP and not some hack in another part of the world, I allow the request to go through.

It is definately more work, but WELL WORTH IT.

Just some freindly advice from a fellow automotive enthusiast who has to deal with this stuff too!!

Judging by how much spam there is on the board it might take a bit to clean it all up. :bang:

I deleted a ton in the last hour or so. Time to shut down self-moderated registrations again.
'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

Marco,
I hope spammers reach the Pearly Gates and God gives them an ass kicking to the hot place down below. What a bunch of cretins.

Regardless, turned off self-moderated registrations. All new registrations now get approved by admin. And..I deleted like 15 users.

Sorry guys,
Colin

DON'T REPLY TO SPAM..

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Sat Nov 17, 2012 8:16 pm

Replying to spam seems tempting, but try to avoid it...

It alerts the spammers that the board is actively reviewing their offerings so then they'll hit up more and more.

Also it creats more to delete, slowing the deletion process down, thanks for your co-op in the matter.. 8)

Clicking the report button is ok, making another thread to alert me is fair, and sending a PM is a real good way. However my inbox is full.
