No backrest adjustment - any idea

Postby erik monza » Sat Jan 26, 2013 6:25 pm

I am redoing my Monza and might reupholster the seats, so now I am ad it, I would like to make some kind of backrest adjustment, I think it is very odd that they have no adjustment in 1975 - 1980.

Do I have to cut and weld an adjustment system from an other car or any suggestions

My old Renault 16 had continuously variable backrest adjustment with a dial, already when they came out in 1966

Any comment will be appreciated

Thanks from Erik

I think there was a optional adjustable seat. I have no idea what it would take to try and convert one over.

I think at GM reclining seats were an option ($$$) on larger more luxurious vehicles until the early 80's. Any real reclining seats would have rendered the rear seats totally useless for anyone older than 6. 8)

I seem to remember someone back in the day offering a kit to make these seats recliners but with the seats striped bare they will only recline about 2" (buy my selective memory) then it is steel on steel so I am not sure how that would work, these were advertised for H's & F-Body's in the same ad' . I've been watching ebay but haven't seen them yet. Maybe try NPD or Classic? Harry (Guess where I am going net surfing now?)

I didnt make mine adjustable, but I did grind on the bracket where it rests on the stop in order to allow the back to lean rearward a bit further, and it is much more comfortable. Just a simple solution to fixing that bolt upright position they gave us back then.

Unless you want stock appearing seats, your best bet may be measureing the width of the seats, and grab the whole seat out of a newer car at a local wreckers. This will most likely require adjustments or welding on the seat brackets to make them work.

What about proping up front seat floor mounts ith some washers to desired pitch? Another way to do this is cut floor seat mounts and add to front and/or remove from rear seat mounts...

Hey Erik I think 3rd gen F-Body's seats may fit and they have similar size and styling+/-(a little more squared off maybe?) with adjustment and some special editions came with "Recaro's or Lear seats" the "top 2 seat Co's of that era. Shipping would be a Bear to Sweden and I don't imagine there would be many over there as I haven't even seen many here and they were everywhere when new. Good Luck I'm sure you will find something, and keep us posted Harry

My Vega has the optional adjustable seat. It's easy to add, but it's worthless in my opinion. It is a metal handle that keeps the seatback from going to the full back position, giving you a choice of upright or more upright. I'm adding it to the Monza seats I'm installing just because it is an option my car had originally, but it will probably never be used. My sister ordered the same type adjuster on her 1979 Camaro, and was severely disappointed when she got it!

As was I when I picked up my '75 Camaro. For the price of the option I could have bought a couple cases of beer which would have been a lot more usefull.

Well I board Camaro seats, from 1990 something, they have one peace backrest and electric control on driver seat only, I will look for a year on them later.
I will have to interchange the mounting system, specially the passenger seat mounting system looks different, but it looks like it will be a easy job, I will keep you posted
