Production Day 242!!!!

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:50 pm

Friday, August 18th, 1978..

We've reached the end of the line for the 1978's!! On this day, the last Monza, Sunbird, Skyhawk, and Starfire for the model year 1978 roll down the line. The 1979 models would begin production on Monday morning.

If known sales records are accurate, and if no production line rejects caused the final stamped vin to be a higher number. Then the last 1978 Monza should be monza #138,832 (Stamped 238,832). However, do to the nature of a fast production line, and error's beyond anyone's control the last vin may be found to have an even higher VIN.

Sunbird's reached 86,789 Or @ 358 per day
Skyhawk's 24,589 102 Per day.
Starfire's 17,321 71 per day.
*Courtesy, Bryan's Monza site.. http://monza.homestead.com/Production.html

Bear in mind, daily production numbers ramped up through the year, so there would have been less than these numbers at first, and more towards the end of the model year. These #s probably represent the line speed about mid way through the cycle or about late Jan. /Feb./March time frame.

To be sure, the line never slowed and that next Monday morning the line started up with all new 1979 date codes, and any; trim, chassis, or drive-train upgrades introduced for 1979.
Here's some examples of the changes made in short order;....
Paint color's were changed.
A new 'Dual-Jet' carb was introduced for the V6 and v8's.
The 4 cylinder engine had a new cylinder head. A new Sunroof ('vista-vent') meant new roof stamping procedures.
Buick and Olds models used slightly restyled front nose pieces, & Pontiacs got revised grill inserts.
Interiors had new fabric's.
Monza Spyder Decal theme, had a very slight change... to be brief..color choices (the script and highlight color) correlated to interior color. Main color selection of black and gold and overall size and shaped remained identical to '78 and 77.

Wanted:
Any build information from this day would be great. Check build tags for codes 08D and "42"-1234

Hope you enjoyed! Should we start 1979? 1980? All years????????
