Tony: I've always believed that "There's a tool
for every job and a job for every tool." Thus,
nothing ever works better than the tool specifically
designed for the purpose. That said, and having looked at
the Web page, I'm reminded that 20 or 30 years ago
Snap-On patented and sold wrenches and sockets that had
rounded bumps instead of flat gripping surfaces.
Purportedly this allowed the tools to grab the nut or bolt
more toward the center of each face rather than put
pressure on the corners. Supposedly this allowed more
torque without slipping or rounding off. It was much
ballyhooed. I just checked their web page (www.snapon.com)
and it may be that it still is--they use the term
"flank drive" to describe some products, though I can't
be certain from their site and catalog that this is
the same thing, as the pictures and specifications
don't look like what I remember from years ago.

Me, I was a Craftsman kinda guy (and still
am--couldn't afford Snap-On at the time and am too cheap now,
and further, despite the advertising, I was never
totally convinced that they had "built a better
mousetrap") So I never got to try them, and have never talked
with anybody who had.

These Metrinch's seem to
be similarly designed. I'd check Snap-on. Either a
dealer, or a mechanic who uses them. If they have
withstood the test of time and the professional mechanics
are using them, then I'd say that the idea is good.
That then leaves the question whether the design is
flexible enough to work on both metric and standard sizes.
Logic says to me that a precision tool, with carefully
engineered clearances, will have a much higher torque
capability than some sloppy fit "one size fits all" unit.

Mark,
Your thoughts on the "Metrinch" were the
same as mine. I was hoping to hear a positive
endorsement from someone as I could use a good metric set,
and if they could be used for S.A.E. it would be a
nice bonus.

I do have a professional mechanic
friend that uses "Snap-On". I'll check with him about
"flank drive" and if it is the same
thing.

Thanks,

Tony:

If you want a "good" set buy
Craftsman. Their guarantee cannot be beat, and Sears stores
are likely to be around for many more years. Others
have the same guarantee, but it is harder to find a
place that carries the brand ten or twenty years
later.

If you want a "great" set buy Snap-On. Their quality
is unparalleled, though my neighbor is a "dealer"
and he acknowledges that mechanics are on occasion
able to break "his" tools. Further, in my experience
they are more ergonomic. I bought a set of Craftsman
wrenches a couple of years ago, and I don't like them.
Why? Because they have cheapened them, and the narrow
side of the wrench is too narrow, and it cuts into my
fingers and bruises them when I really have a stubborn
nut or bolt. I went back and compared them to some
very old Craftsman wrenches and there was more "meat"
on the edge, and they are much more comfortable to
use. I recall that years ago Snap-On wrenches were
also "hefty", and I suspect (but don't know for sure)
that today's Snap-On wrenches will be a lot more
comfortable to work with as well.

As in all things,
you generally get what you pay for. As "they" also
say, "Quality doesn't cost, it pays."

Just some
thoughts for the new year. Happy.

Mark

Tony, I have Craftsman, Snap-on and Metrench
tools. I have never had a problem with any of the
Metrench tools, they work fine. There are a lot of times
when they have come in very handy bacause most all of
my tools are standard. I like to keep the kit in my
car for emergencies but I have found myself bringing
them in to use in my shop more and more. I like them a
lot and have been very happy with them. Take Care,
Chris.

Fri eve.
OK, Ken and Duke, you've outed me. I like the
Cosworths, very cool cars, but I don't own one. And
my ignorance showed in not knowing that the Cosworths
only were equipped with 7.5" rears.
In the early to mid-80's, Richmond Gear sold a 6.5"
4.11 ring and pinion for the Vega. They also sold a
3.73 (or it might have been 3.70) I have the 4.11's I
bought from them on my bench here.
I also have a 1960 Austin Healey Sprite with a
narrowed Vega posi rearend in it. I used to run the
4.11s when I had a built 4-cyl in it. More recently,
I swapped in a 3.4L GM V6, and I'm currently running
3.36's.
What I'd like is something in between, ~3.7.
Haven't been able to find anything anywhere for the
6.5". So I knew that the Cosworths ran stiff gears,
thought I might inquire of your group, and offer a
trade to someone wanting 4.11's. Didn't know the 7.5"
rule. (Well... you know what I mean.)
So, sorry to have bored you with this story and
irrelevant inquiry. Thanks for the information.
Hamondale
PS Long term, I'm upgrading to a 7.5" rear. The 6.5
can't handle it in my car either.

chance. This is the same car Dick Baumhauer had for several years. It
is 98% original (high pressure fuel lines have been replaced) with
the original tires (still holding air). I will take some pictures of
it as soon as I can get it out of the garage (it is blocked by a

The main reason for selling the Cosworth (and other parts) is I am
looking into the possible purchase of 35th Aniversary Camaro. I could
trade it in but I would rather find it a good home where it would be

i have had similar problems on #554.
the problem i had is the car would start and then run
for awhile. then it would just die.
the problem ended up being the little red wire which
runs off the positive battery terminal at the battery
was corroded internally. this corroded wire shorted
out the fuel cicuit in the computer. after repairing
the ecm and the corroded wire i have had no problems.
i found this wire corroded on other gm cars with a no
start problems 2 other times. check it out. good luck.

Dave's Vega Village also reproduces the air deflector. He has it
made out of fiberglass and it fits very well. He may have a used one
as well but I wanted to make sure you were aware of other options.
