When i switched from footbraking to a trans-brake, my 60ft times dropped by .15, my 1/8 ET dropped two full tenths and around 3 tenths in the 1/4. Went from a 10.15 to a 9.85; not sure what kind of results you'll see with a car that's 2 seconds slower.
Oh, I almost forgot; don't forget to push you helmet against the back of the seat. Just about "rung my bell" the first time I let go of the button and my helmet smacked the roll bar. I had no idea the car would launch THAT much harder!

A friend found this on you tube. This is the stock 4.2 (254CI) 70k miles with dual 3-1’s headers with megaphones. (note: I have no idea who took this video -this run was embarrassing luckily I was sitting on the single)

you can hear the converter is too tight, need to adress that issue

Yep! Sounds like a nasty six. I've seen a few in my days at the track and they do sound different for sure. Nice run eh.

Dude you have infected my mind with this build. I can't stop thinking about this engine. There are a few other guys out there building with them and they just look like they've got so much potential. How does it rev? It seems like the massive 4" stroke would slow it down. Does it?? What's the throttle response like? I'm pretty much hoping you give me negative responses to these questions because I HAVE to stop thinking about this!!!

LL8' I love the sound of flat sixes and your "JunkYard Dog's" pipes mimic them perfectly when you got her opened up! Sweet! :th: Harry P.S. Nick why should your build be completely changed only two or three times? If I had started this build version (5.X?) twenty five years ago I would have been driving mine for more than twenty of them now!

Honestly it does well, not sure all the reasons but throttle response is every bit as good as any pushrod V8/V6 I have tuned if not better. Maybe the stock compression ratio (10.5:1) and the manifold is completely dry because the injector is in the head in the intake runner portion, pointed right at the back of the intake valves helps. OHC 4 valve motors usually do good in this department. I can tell you this engine is capable of 600 HP bone stock with a turbo. We have a forum and many members if you’re interested, the cool thing about the vortec is that there are 4/5/6 cylinder versions, how cool would it be to have a 5 cylinder H-body?
Honestly give me a month, I am fairly confident there is more HP in this $200 70k mile motor via my cam timing (VVT) tuning, I will put it on the trans brake and I bet it runs an 11.9X

I was actually thinking about that 3.5l 5 cyl. A neighbor of mine has one in a Colorado. Pretty interesting. Is that the same family? And there's a 4 cyl? Where's the forum? I'm in for a peep or two. I was thinking of possible applications, like an old an E30 BMW or something might be fun. They've got a pretty great 6 but a bit $$$. Super compact though. This one does look pretty big. LOL! I'm interested without question. THanks dude!

**a few minutes pass**

WOW that 2.9l 4cyl looks very interesting. Pretty stout. That could be a pretty damn potent turbo engine. At this point I need to say… um. thanks? *he said unsurely* Because now I've got a whole new obsession brewing. LOL! Seriously though. Cool.

The way gas prices are staying up I've looked at the 2.8/2.9L Atlas engines, also. I'd like to find more information, like dimensions and which bellhousing pattern they use.

You guys got it, the Atlas/vortec series of engines. The Colorado/canyon have 4 different options, 2 diff 4 cylinders (2.8/2.9)and 2 diff 5 cylinders(3.5/3.7 also found in hummer H3). There is only 1 version of the 6 cylinder (4.2) and was not in trucks just the SUV’s trailblazer, envoy, a saab and isuzu something or other. In fact there is some suspicion that the 5 cylinder may flow better relative to size which may make it a good option and take some length off of these behemoth 6 cylinders. I am sure you looked at the 1st page of the thread where I compared it to the SBC.

Come check out the forum (hope this isn’t against the rules) here it is http://vortec4200.com/forum1/

I always thought one of these 4 cylinders would be a great fit for a stock type vega at 185 HP is a big improvement over the factory engine and a turbo would be easy 325HP with stock motor.

Let me know what I can do to help, there are many options and solutions the members of the forum have come up with as far as trans adapters, engine mgt, intake/exhaust adapters etc. they have different bolt pattern than an SBC but luckily the dowls align to early GM trans (PG/TH350 etc) making it MUCH easier There are other cool engines such as BMW etc... i like different stuff what ever it is i think you should do it :D

Ok still on the foot brake.... but i got control of the cam timing (VVT)

9/5/14

9:58 PM cam timing shut off
60" 1.831
1/4 12.840 107 MPH

10:15 PM increased overlap (add some retard) just took a stab at it, NO other changes
60" 1.724
1/4 12.247 111.16 MPH

9/6/14
3:37 PM (no changes from above just better weather)
60' 1.700
1/4 12.156 111.95 MPH

almost got the 112 mph and almost into the 1.6XX range on the 60'

I think there is more where this came from
